Access to reliable, culturally responsive healthcare depends on more than buildings or equipment. It depends on people who understand the communities they serve.
And in rural and remote regions, particularly those with large Alaska Native populations, trust and cultural familiarity can determine whether someone seeks care at all. That reality is central to a rural nursing recruitment initiative supported by Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska and led by the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) School of Nursing.
The program focuses on recruiting residents from rural Alaskan communities, supporting them through nursing education, and helping them return home as trained professionals. The long-term goal is to strengthen healthcare statewide by increasing the number of nurses who are deeply rooted in the communities where they practice.
