Last week's Spirit Run raised over $4000 for food insecurity on campus!

With the support of students, alumni, staff and community partners, UAA is taking steps to help students facing food insecurity. Aside from monetary donations, the Spirit Run also accepted canned goods for donations to the Seawolf Food Pantry, and hundreds of cans were given from the community. This is one of our most meaningful campus traditions, and our office was honored to take part in it!

Alaska's bar scene has a long and colorful history, and this week's has literally written the book on it.

Doug Vandegraft, A.A.S. Mapping and Surveying, '98 came to Alaska as a cartographer for the Bureau of Land Management. He got a degree at UAA to keep up with quickly changing cartography technology. After graduating, he moved to Washington, D.C. and spent the next 14 years researching Alaska's most infamous bars, resulting in his book "A Guide to the Notorious Bars of Alaska," which released its third edition last year. We asked you to bring your best for trivia night, and you did not disappoint!

We had around 80 alumni and friends for Tuesday's trivia event at Odd Man Rush Brewing. Between 20 teams, 41 questions and prizes on the line, it was a night full of educated guessing. Thanks to all who attended and to the president and vice president of our board for hosting! We're already thinking ahead to the next trivia night.

Though we may not see snow for a while longer, today is the fall equinox and marks the first day of autumn. Our days will start to get markedly shorter from now until the spring equinox in March. On the bright side, campus is beautiful this time of year!

For Anchorage native Megan Adkins, UAA's Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences program was more than a stepping stone. It was the pivotal experience that shaped the course of her career.

The program's broad, systems-level view of health gave her the foundation to pursue a doctorate in Occupational Therapy and, ultimately, to build a career helping elders across Alaska regain their independence.

Looking back, Adkins credits the program's emphasis on the socioeconomic and cultural context of health with shaping how she approaches patient care today.
