A few days after Fat Bear Week wrapped up, here’s a pretty amazing reminder that there’s much more to Alaska’s brown bears than their impressive size. 🐻

APU graduate student and researcher Beth Rosenberg is the co-author of a new study developing AI technology that can identify individual brown bears in the wild, even as their appearance changes throughout the year. The technology could help researchers better understand bear behavior, populations and movement without relying on collars, tags or other invasive methods.

Rosenberg and researchers at EPFL trained the system using more than 72,000 images of 109 individual brown bears from Alaska’s McNeil River State Game Sanctuary. Enjoy this video of a bear chasing salmon from this summer!

From Fat Bear Week champions to cutting-edge wildlife research, Alaska’s bears are giving us plenty to learn from. 🐻

From 4 apprentice teachers to 14 and counting! 🎓🍎

This fall, APU’s Teacher Apprenticeship Program brought apprentice teachers together for an intensive week of learning, collaboration and hands-on training, alongside experienced educators participating in joint expert teacher training.

What started with just four students has grown into a statewide community of 14 apprentice teachers representing communities from across Alaska, including Wales, Gambell, Unalakleet, Hooper Bay, Mountain Village, Scammon Bay, Tuluksak, Akiak, Akiachak, and Kake.

Through APU’s Community & Place-Based Education programs, aspiring teachers are preparing to bring their knowledge, experiences and connections back to the students and communities they call home -- all without leaving it!

We’re proud to celebrate APU Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing student Tripp J Crouse, whose poem “Friends with Ghosts” has been published in the September issue of Poetry Magazine, one of the nation’s most established poetry publications.

The poem, written as a tribute to Tripp’s mother and their q***r identity, was inspired by their desire to learn the Ojibwe word for Two-Spirit. After Tripp’s mother passed away in September 2025, the poem took on an even deeper meaning as a tribute to her.

Tripp’s work will also be featured in the forthcoming anthology The Starry Field: A Gathering of New Two-Spirit and Indigeq***r Poetry.

Congratulations, Tripp, on this incredible milestone and on sharing your work with readers across the country! 💙💛
