You might notice that we have a lot of big changes happening in the UAA Department of Art. From new display walls in the halls to the renovation of the Arc Gallery next to the Consortium Library.

Alongside those changes, we’re excited to have so many new talents in our department, bringing fresh and creative voices to each Area of Study, as well as to our exhibition spaces!

Please welcome to Professors Brian Walker II, Ayla Murray, Julian Wong-Nelson, and Christopher Richards!

Make sure to make our new faculty feel welcome, as you’ll be seeing them around campus a lot! And of course if you are interested in learning more about the courses they offer and opportunities we have in the department to learn, make sure to set up an appointment with your advisor!

You might have noticed a new page being mentioned in our posts recently. Well that’s because we have a brand new profile for all of our upcoming and current exhibitions in our galleries!

UAA Department of Art Exhibitions and Galleries is where you’ll be able to see what’s coming up in the Kimura Gallery and Arc Gallery, (with the latter still under construction, but don’t worry, we have some exciting new opportunities planned!)

So if you are currently following the UAA Kimura Gallery and Arc Gallery page, make sure to like and follow our new page to stay current!

Earlier this month, UAA’s Art Historian & Professor Christopher T. Richards traveled to Geneva for the 6th Swiss Congress for Art History.

Organized jointly by the Swiss Association of Art Historians (VKKS | ASHHA | ASSSA) and the Division of Art History at the University of Geneva, the congress is aimed at art historians, art researchers and experts from all fields (including both practice and theory), and all institutions. Those interested are invited to submit proposals for 20 minute papers within one of the ten sessions that are facilitated by the advisory board.

Professor Richards had the opportunity to speak at the conference and presented his talk: “Désirer et troubler : approches q***r et trans en art médiéval.” Which translates to: Troubling Desires: Q***r and Trans Approaches to Medieval Art.

His session aimed to foster exchanges between those who work on gender and sexuality in the field of medieval art history. It’s premised on the idea that the tools required to study premodern sexuality and gender in and as related to the visual arts are not necessarily those that have been so central to modern and contemporary histories of these topics.

We’re proud of the work and amazing experiences that our faculty beyond the walls of the University of Alaska Anchorage. Thank you, Professor Richards, for highlighting your opportunity with us and we’re excited to share more with our UAA Community!

Thank you to everyone who came out for the UAA Dept of Art Faculty Exhibition last night. We had a packed gallery!

We truly appreciate each of you who attended, your support of our faculty is immensely felt.

And thank you to our amazing exhibition crew for putting together an amazing display.

if you were unable to make it for the opening reception, the exhibit will be on display until October 16 in the Kimura Gallery in the fine arts building. Open Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 5 pm.

Please join the UAA Department of Art this Friday, September 11th, as we host our Faculty exhibition in the Kimura Gallery!

A fantastic opportunity to meet our professors and staff and get to know the works that show their creativity. The exhibition will be available for viewing until October 16th.

For those of you who are a part of the “Friends of the Arts”, we will have a special preview starting at 4:30. If you’d like to know more about this program and what it offers, there will be staff on hand to tell you more. This event is proudly supported by the Friends of the Arts.

Light refreshments will be available.
