When the Alaskan outdoors is your lab, there's no shortage of experiences. For UAA’s new Place-Based Environmental Monitoring and Statistics field course, UAA biology and geology students visited Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Homer, Alaska, to learn how staff monitor estuary environments and connect with community members who use their data.
Students checked traps during low tide to monitor for invasive European green crabs. Although the invasive species has not yet been recorded in the area, students record data from other tidal wildlife, like the Pacific staghorn sculpin and other crab species.
Generously funded by a ConocoPhillips Arctic Science and Engineering Award, this course brings UAA researchers and students together to help protect Alaska’s coast.
