Dean Michael Coyne asked that this message be shared and we are proud to annouce that our graduates can now take the Washington State bar exam immediately upon graduating.

RE: Washington State Bar Association Approved Law Schools

Dear Michael L. Coyne:

The Board of Governors of the Washington State Bar Association in May approved an amendment, which will go into effect September 1, 2026, to expand “approved law schools” beyond ABA accreditation; come September, if another state approves or accredits and allows graduates of a law school to sit for their bar exam, we will allow them to do the same in Washington.

The new definition of approved law schools is part of a larger effort in Washington to reduce unnecessary barriers to the legal profession in Washington. Because individuals who are licensed to practice in other states can be admitted in Washington after only one year of practice, without respect to whether or how they achieved a JD, not allowing similarly situated persons to sit for the bar exam in Washington State appears to be an unnecessary barrier.

We believe your law school may meet this new definition. It is important to note that the definition requires the JD to be earned on or after the date the law school was approved by the state and the individual must be eligible to apply for the bar exam in that state by virtue of the JD.

This means graduates with qualifying JDs from your law school will be eligible to apply for admission by bar exam in Washington based on the JD alone without having to obtain an LLM for the practice of law from an ABA accredited law school. They will be eligible to apply for the bar exam in Washington beginning September 1, 2026, which is when applications open for the February 2027 administration of the NextGen UBE in Washington.
