New findings from the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging show that many adults over 50 say pets help reduce stress, provide purpose, encourage physical activity, and improve overall well-being. However, the research also highlights real challenges such as rising costs and the strain pet care can place on budgets. The poll offers thoughtful insights about the ways pets impact mental, physical, and social health, while also sharing how older adults are weighing the benefits against financial realities.

After a teacher encouraged him to take his potential seriously, Michigan Engineering alumnus Jhawan Davis (BSEIO ’19) turned that inspiration into action. Through the Detroit Educational Takeover, he’s helping Detroit Public Schools students access tutoring, mentorship, and new opportunities in STEM.

Since 2022, DET has supported hundreds of students while partnering with Michigan Engineering to create hands-on learning experiences that expand what young people see for their futures.

Recently, University of Michigan School of Nursing students volunteered at Gleaners Community Food Bank as part of their Population Health clinical course, gaining firsthand experience with the social determinants of health and the realities of food insecurity in our communities.

By helping prepare and distribute food, students connected clinical learning with community impact, building empathy, leadership, and a deeper understanding of person-centered care.

Experiences like these prepare future nurses to care for patients, not just in hospitals, but in the context of their everyday lives.
