University of Michigan Bands Go Blue! 〽️ The University of Michigan Bands are among the finest and most historic collegiate ensembles in the nation. Revelli and H. Robert Reynolds.

Begun in 1897, the University of Michigan Bands include five symphonic ensembles (), the Michigan Marching Band (), and several other athletic ensembles. Consisting of five symphonic ensembles (for both music majors and non-majors), the Michigan Marching Band, and several athletic ensembles, the Michigan Band program has been a central part of the remarkable artistic identity and vibrant spirit of the University of Michigan since its establishment in 1897. Giving over one hundred public performances each year and playing for hundreds of thousands of alumni, students, and fans of wind music throughout the world, Michigan Bands are defined by the exceptional standard established by legendary directors, including William D. That unique legacy was further enhanced by Michael Haithcock and is now carried on by Jason Fettig. The Michigan Marching Band has cultivated an international reputation for creative and exhilarating field shows at the Big House and beyond. Its world renown is shared by the historic Symphony Band and Concert Band, ensembles that have remained at the forefront of exceptional performances and recordings of the finest works for winds, along with a robust tradition of bringing new music into the canon. 🎼 Graduate Conductor Spotlight | Meet Sean Hogan

Tomorrow night, Sean conducts Extinguish Thou My Eyes by David Biedenbender. Biedenbender first wrote it as a choral work, setting a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke, and later turned it into this piece for chamber winds.

To prepare, Sean and the ensemble lined up the original choral lyrics with the wind music. The text shaped the arc of their performance, showing them where the music should gain depth and where it should be emphasized.

Tonight, John conducts the world premiere of Fireworks by Peter Cohn, a composition student at the University of Michigan (BM β€˜27) and an Ann Arbor native.

The piece is structured like a fireworks show. Its motives trace the paths and bursts of rockets, and it’s designed to overwhelm and dazzle your senses. Working directly with Peter on his music over the past few weeks has been a highlight of this concert cycle!

Tomorrow night, Jennifer conducts Fanfare Canzonique by Brian Balmages, a modern work for large brass ensemble based on a canzona by Renaissance composer Giovanni Gabrieli.
She and the students spent this concert cycle exploring historical brass performance practices and bringing elements of Gabrieli's original into this modern performance.

Tomorrow night, Detrich conducts Embers in the Black by Kevin Poelking, a modern chamber work for soprano, alto, tenor and bari saxophones, flutes and clarinets, grounded by bass and contra clarinet.

The piece is inspired by a short text from the composer’s program note:
β€œThis place is familiar, but never safe.
Surely one more trip will do no harm.
Yet as the blanket of night covers the land,
two eyes emerge like embers in the black.”

On Friday, the 𝐆𝐨π₯𝐝𝐞𝐧 π€π πž 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐝 helped celebrate the formal launch of the Center for American Band History Research at U-M, a partnership between π’πŒπ“πƒ and the Clements Library. The concert brought back the era when bands were the nation’s top entertainment and band leaders like Sousa and Gilmore were celebrities.

The program was played on the authentic instrumentation of those early bands. It featured newspaper marches like β€œThe Washington Post” and β€œThe Detroit Free Press,” Pryor’s β€œThe Whistler and his Dog,” and Clarke’s β€œThe Debutante.” It closed with β€œThe Blue Streak” galop.
