History: Delta Sigma Delta was founded at the University of Michigan on November 15th, 1882. Two Michigan dental students, Lou Mitchell and Charles Howard, were invited to join Nu Sigma Nu, a medical fraternity. They decided to decline; why should they join a medical f
raternity when they were going to be dentists? So on November 15th, 1882, seven dental students met at Mrs. Slattery's boarding house and founded the first dental fraternity in the world. degree, which they were soon to recieve, to D.S.D. Thus, Delta Sigma Delta was born, and the first chapter became known as the Alpha Chapter. Current Standings: Today, over 57,000 members have been initiated into Delta Sigma Delta, and there are over 30,600 active lifetime members all over the world. In the United States, there are 37 undergraduate chapters, as well as 42 graduate chapters. Delta Sigma Delta grew from a small group of students in Ann Arbor, Michigan into a predominant international dental fraternity for thousands of students.
