한인 미주 이민은 100년이 넘은 역사를 가지고 있습니다. 미국 연방 통계청 조사에 의하면, 2013년 미국에 살고 있는 한인의 수는 140만이 넘으며, 그 중 110만이 미국이 아닌 다른 나라에서 태어난 것으로 조사되었습니다.
엘에이 카운티는 미주 한인의 약 20%가 거주하는 매우 중요한 곳입니다. 이같은 중요함에도 불구하고 우리 미주 한인의 생활 대해 알려진 것이 별로 없는데, 이는 한인에 관한 데이터가 절대적으로 부족하기 때문입니다. 미국에서 진행되는 조사들은 대부분 한국어로 이루어지지 않고, 또한 응답자 중 한인 수가 매우 적어 한인사회를 제대로 이해하는데 많은 어려움이 있습니다. 이로 인해 우리 한인의 필요와 희망사항이 정부와 사회 정책에 반영되는데 한계가 있습니다.
본 연구는 엘에이 카운티에 거주하는 미국 태생이 아닌 한인들의 건강과 생할에 관한정보를 수집하고 또한 정보수집 개선 방법에 대해 알아보는데 목적을 두고 있습니다. 800명의 성인으로 부터 자료를 수집하는 것이 목표입니다.
