Rebecca Blumenstein, Diana Kapp, Mursal Rahim and Anna Quindlen joined us for a powerful conversation about Blumenstein and Kapp's book "The Last Free Women: A Daring Escape from Afghanistan & Coming of Age in America," the story of The New York Times’ evacuation of 200 employees and their families from its Kabul bureau in 2021 as the Taliban took control of Afghanistan and the journeys of four young women who are building new lives in the U.S.

Come see 2024 Knight-Wallace alum Joshua Sharpe at Detroit Story Fest!

The oldest human art form is coming to the big stage. The 2026 season of Detroit Story Fest is here. Featuring award-winning journalists and comedians; short film and dance; live music and performance. This year's theme is "Villains," featuring stories about what we fear, what we misunderstand and what we become. Villains are the ultimate contradiction, and this season explores them in all their humor and humanity; fear and foolishness; vice and virtue.

On August 15, 2021, as the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan, the lives of women and girls across Afghanistan saw their rights and freedom stripped away. They lost the right to education, work, freedom of movement and participation in public life.

"Women: A Daring Escape from Afghanistan & Coming of Age in America," shares the story of The New York Times effort to evacuate more than 200 Afghan colleagues and family members.
Among them were four young Afghan women on the path to careers as doctors and lawyers.

Join co-authors Rebecca Blumenstein and Diana Kapp; Mursal Rahim, one of the women featured in the book; and author and journalist Anna Quindlen for a conversation about the evacuation and the journeys of four women building new lives in the U.S.

Wallace House Presents: "The DOJ and Threats to the Press"

In July, the Trump Administration subpoenaed several New York Times reporters, including our speaker Eric Schmitt, for reporting on security concerns about the Boeing 747 given to the president by the Qatari government. Gabe Rottman of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press joins Schmitt for a conversation about government pressure on journalists and why the public should care about threats to journalists reporting on those in power.

Yesterday, Wallace House hosted the 39th Annual Graham Hovey Lecture, with speaker Christopher Baxter of SpotlightPA.

Fellows, friends, and members of the university and local community gathered in the Wallace House garden for a moving conversation about the state of local news, the promise of a free press and how we can help rebuild trust in journalism and keep that promise.

Our 2026-2027 Knight-Wallace Fellows went to the heart of Detroit and learned about the history, art and communities that make it shine today. πŸ’« πŸ™οΈ

The Fellows explored Michigan Central Station, NewLab, TechTown, the "Gateway to Freedom" memorial, the Tuxedo Project, and many more historical buildings and markers.

We thank our amazing tour guide, Jamon Jordan, whose words brought history to life and taught our Fellows the stories of Detroit's past and present.

The first three photos were taken by 2026-2027 Fellow, Reid Williams, and the last two were taken by Tre Scott, husband of 2026-2027 Fellow LaCrai Scott.
