Know a community college student thinking about transferring to Michigan? Here’s a way for them to hear from a current UMSI student who made the move.

Lance Negrut is one of our Bachelor of Science in Information student ambassadors, a current student who can talk with prospective students about the program and the application process. Lance transferred to U-M from Oakland Community College ⁠and chose UMSI for its supportive community, interdisciplinary education and opportunities beyond the classroom. He serves as president of the School of Information Bachelor’s Association and has been active in the ninja warrior community for a decade.

BSI applications are open now. Transfer students from community colleges and other four-year institutions can apply by Feb. 15, and many begin in their junior year. High school students can apply through the Common Application by selecting preferred admission to the School of Information. Prospective students can schedule with Lance or any BSI ambassador, based on availability or interests.

Transferring is a big decision, for students and for the families supporting them. National Transfer Student Week is a great time for us to share a few ways UMSI helps.

Before you apply
Our free, three-day Community College Summer Institute comes with housing, meals and a stipend. (CCSI applications for summer 2027 open in January!) We also host information sessions and one-on-one conversations with admissions staff or current students.

Once you’re here
iSuccess is a program that helps transfer students build community at UMSI. You’ll also find free tutoring, an embedded U-M Counseling and Psychological Services psychologist and emergency funding for one-time, unforeseen expenses.

On cost
Transfer students are eligible for the Go Blue Guarantee, which covers full in-state tuition for up to four years for Michigan residents, based on family income and assets. U-M students who would lose funding from their current school by transferring into the BSI program are eligible for matching UMSI scholarships.

Know a student who isn’t sure which major fits? Here’s a way for them to hear from a current UMSI student who found hers.

Shoumyta “Shrey” Das is one of our Bachelor of Science in Information student ambassadors, a current student who can talk with prospective students about the program and the application process. She’s originally from Bangladesh and loves event planning, junk journaling and travel. Shrey came to U-M sure she’d pursue computer science, then discovered UMSI was the right fit for her interests and future plans. She wants to create technology that is accessible, usable and enjoyable for people.

UMSI deans past and present, plus alumni speakers from the classes of 1977 through 2025, are taking the stage tonight.

Check out the lineup for our Centennial Program, happening Friday, Oct. 16, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Stamps Auditorium.

Dean Andrea Forte will lead a fireside chat with five former deans: Daniel E. Atkins III (1992-98), John Leslie King (2000-06), interim dean C. Olivia Frost (2006-07), Jeffrey K. MacKie-Mason (2010-2015) and Thomas A. Finholt (2016-22).

Then, five alumni will give lightning talks on the future of information: Michelle LeBlanc (MADS ’21), Chiao Lin (MSI ’25), Louis Rosenfeld (MLIS ’90) Jamie Voris (BSE ’96) and Veronica Wilkerson-Johnson (AMLS ’77). Ann Arbor producer and DJ Tadd Mullinix will perform.

Know someone who’s considering a data science master’s but wondering how it would fit around work or family? Here’s a way for them to hear from a current MADS student who works as a data scientist.

Anita Nti is one of our Master of Applied Data Science student ambassadors, a current student who can talk with prospective students about the program and the application process. She’s from Columbus, Ohio, and is also a professional makeup artist. She saw MADS as an opportunity to strengthen her technical foundation and expand the types of problems she can solve with data, and she appreciates how intentionally the program was designed to be flexible for students at different stages of life ⁠— whether they’re working full time or balancing family responsibilities.

MADS is 100% online, so students can study from wherever they are. The application doesn’t require essays, letters of recommendation or the GRE, and there’s no application fee.

The final application deadline for Winter 2027 is Nov. 15, and classes begin Jan. 13. Prospective students can schedule an appointment with Anita or our other MADS student ambassador, Khurram, based on their availability or interests.

Mikko Tuomela (MSI '12) says UMSI's Victor Rosenberg encouraged him to go for PhD studies — apparently by quoting Hillel the Elder, something he "only realized some time ago."

Mikko sent us a virtual scrapbook from his time at UMSI, with photos of his arrival on campus in 2010, the student lounge where he spent time studying and networking, a regular SI Gaming Night, a program for the SI Revue and a conference he coordinated in December 2011.

Mikko says the conference with the U-M Institute for the Humanities “connected information science with digital humanities, helped me build my academic network, and led me to University of Illinois after Michigan.”

Today, he’s a lead data scientist at Virnex Group Oy. Thanks for sharing, Mikko!
