A new chapter is underway at the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology ⚡️

Dean John Cairney joined us this August after serving as head of the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences at the The University of Queensland, Australia. With a background spanning sociology, epidemiology, and sport management, he brings a broad perspective on the ways kinesiology can create meaningful impact.

“What I am most looking forward to in my first year as Dean is getting to know the people who make Michigan Kinesiology such a special place—our students, faculty, staff, alumni, families, and partners—and working together to build on the school’s extraordinary strengths. Excellence is achieved by creating the conditions for people to thrive, new opportunities, and building partnerships that elevate and amplify work grounded in rigor and evidence. I am excited about what we can accomplish together.

For our students, my message is simple: embrace everything that Michigan has to offer. One of our great Michigan songs, The University, calls on us to ‘be free to teach, to serve, to probe the unknown.’ You are part of that tradition. Be curious, take some chances, meet people who challenge your thinking, and explore opportunities beyond what you already know. Go Blue!”

Join us in welcoming Dean Cairney to the Leaders and Best in kinesiology!

The U-M School of Kinesiology is proud to announce two funded proposals through the University of Michigan's Strategic Initiative Fund (SIF):

The Exercise Oncology Initiative (EOI), led by David Lipps and Erin Giles, brings together the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center, University of Michigan School of Public Health, and University Of Michigan-Flint College of Health Sciences to develop the first training pathway for professionals to deliver evidence-based exercise support to cancer patients and survivors, positioning U-M as a national leader in exercise oncology. https://myumi.ch/8JJgb

The Michigan Center for Innovation in Women’s Sports advances the health, performance and holistic well-being of female athletes across all ages, sports, and ability levels. Led by Lori Ploutz-Snyder and Sandra Hunter in partnership with the University of Michigan Medical School, the center translates research into actionable solutions that promote lifelong well-being and create lasting societal impact. https://myumi.ch/e77ZJ

The SIF is part of $1 billion in funding over 10 years to accelerate ideas with the potential to create lasting, transformational change across our campus community and society. All funded proposals put the Vision into action.

One week until classes got us cheesin' in Kines 🧀

You don’t have to have it all figured out before next Monday, but it’s a good idea to at least know where you're going in the SKB. Take a lap after move in to scope out your classrooms and find your go-to study spot. The building is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed Saturday and Sunday this week. Need directions? Ask a friendly face.

T-minus 3 weeks until we're back in motion 👟💨

The 2026-27 academic year is just around the corner, and we're getting ready to welcome Kines Wolverines back to campus in A2. Faculty are prepping syllabi, labs and centers are getting ready for another year of research, and classrooms are getting fresh for fall. Yes, even the Commons is getting in tip-top shape.

As we prepare for a new academic year, we want to wish a heartfelt goodbye to Dean Lori Ploutz-Snyder as she concludes 10 years of service to the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology.

"It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as the dean of the School of Kinesiology since 2016. As I reflect on the past 10 years, I am filled with immense gratitude for our incredible community of students, faculty, and staff who have made this journey so rewarding and fun. Serving in this role has given me a front-row seat to see the power of our collective dedication to enhancing opportunities for all through pioneering research, teaching, and meaningful service.

Together we have navigated a period of strategic growth and challenges, including a global pandemic, a $120 million building renovation and move, and a broad expansion of both our budget and our faculty size. We have empowered a new generation of leaders by growing our student body to nearly 1,500 students and launching five new degree programs.

Thank you for your support, your passion, and a lot of good times as we've challenged the idle state.

Forever Go Blue!"

Thank you, Dean Ploutz-Snyder, for your unwavering commitment to the Leaders and Best in kinesiology.
