Associate Professor April Baker-Bell is continuing to expand her transnational scholarship on linguistic justice through three consecutive years of engagement in the United Kingdom. Since 2024, Baker-Bell has worked with scholars, educators, and young people across England to examine anti-Black linguistic racism across Black diasporic contexts and consider how communities can work together toward linguistic justice and global solidarity. Her recent work with Dr. Ian Cushing of Manchester Metropolitan University included workshops, presentations, and a public seminar exploring linguistic justice and connecting experiences across the U.S. and U.K.

Baker-Bell will return to England in September, where she will serve as a plenary speaker at the 59th Annual Conference of the British Association for Applied Linguistics at Aston University and present “Transformative to Whom? Black Linguistic Futures and the Freedom School Paradigm for Applied Linguistics.”
