What does a college experience beyond the classroom look like? This past weekend, high school students joined us for LEAPS Experience Day. Attendees connected with current students, explored the Marygrove campus, participated in hands-on learning, and learned about student projects, internships, and community partnerships that bring learning to life.

Join the Education Policy Initiative on October 26 at noon for an event featuring Marsal School Associate Dean Kara Finnigan as she discusses her research on the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. Dr. Finnigan will share early findings on cross-sector collaboration, organizational networks, and the experiences of families affected by redevelopment, highlighting how the research team works alongside community partners in Detroit. Join the Marsal Family School of Education for a free hybrid screening of the Emmy® Award-winning documentary The Ride Ahead, followed by a discussion with the film’s co-directors, U-M alumnus Dan Habib and his son, Samuel Habib.

The film follows Samuel, a young disabled adult, as he navigates questions about education, relationships, community, independence, and belonging. Through conversations with disability advocates and leaders across the country, The Ride Ahead offers an honest and powerful perspective on disability culture and access.

Professor Tanya Wright explored this question at the inaugural Kohn Social Policy Conference in Detroit, sponsored by the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and its Kohn Collaborative for Social Policy. Wright joined Professor Brian Jacob, Sarah Little of Boston Public Schools, and Delsa Chapman of the Michigan Department of Education for a panel examining how cities can translate literacy reforms into stronger reading outcomes.
