Citizen Science: Bard College An innovative science literacy program required for graduation from Bard College

Inspired by stories from places like Flint, Michigan, and Newburgh, New York, the Citizen Science Program tackles urgent, present-day questions related to water and works to place these conversations within the “new world order” that has resulted from the Covid-19 pandemic. We will also consider in what ways social, historical, and political factors are at work even when we think we are engaged in

“objective” science. In 2022 will explore the properties of water, as well as how these properties influence the contamination (and decontamination) of drinking water. Using laboratory investigations and active classroom discussions during these few intensive January weeks, the focus will be on the creation, analysis, and interpretation of scientific evidence. The program consists of a common core of coursework plus students select one of eight different lab strands.

Taking Citizen Science in Spring 2025? Are you in an Environmental Water Lab section? Then you need to collect a fresh water sample over break and bring it to your first class during the week of January 27, 2025. Check your email for details! (Photo from January 2024 Citizen Science, by Karl Rabe)

“December 16, is the fiftieth anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act, signed into law on December 16, 1974, by President Gerald R. Ford, a Republican. The measure required the Environmental Protection Agency to set maximum contaminant levels for drinking water and required states to comply with them. It protected the underground sources of drinking water and called for emergency measures to protect public health if a dangerous contaminant either was in or was likely to enter a public water system.”

Registration for Spring 2025 Citizen Science should be complete. Many thanks to the amazing folks at the registrar’s office that had to manged the complex optimization problem of specific section requests by students vs. the requirement of hundreds of students that had to fit the class into their schedule. If a student could fit multiple section times into their schedule they may not have received their first choice because other students needed that specific time. No matter which section you were assigned to, we promise you an amazing professor! Go to citizenscience.bard.edu/faculty to read about them all!

Former Citizen Science professor and Bard graduate, Marta Shocket '09 was heard on NPR earlier this week in this piece discussing the outbreak of a rare mosquito-borne disease in the Northeast: Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Citizen Science faculty are walking the talk, out there ensuring the public is accurately informed on the science behind the issues we face today! (link to the NPR piece in photo caption)

Marta is currently teaching at Lancaster University in the UK. For more information on Marta and their research visit https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/lec/about-us/people/marta-shocket

Congratulations to our colleague Dr. Lauren Rose on her very exciting week. Well deserved recognition for a very hard working, brilliant mathematician and teacher.

On the occasion of the Rubik’s Cube’s 50th anniversary, Associate Professor of Mathematics Lauren Rose was interviewed on the Today Show and quoted in the New York Times about using the Rubik’s Cube as a teaching tool. The Rubik’s Cube has 43 quintillion permutations. Rose, who can solve the...

Congratulations to Jace Epter on completion of your senior project! Jace has been the Citizen Science student office worker for the past three Januarys, assisting the faculty and staff throughout the program: making emergency photocopies, ensuring the faculty are fed, transporting them as needed, creating our more entertaining social media posts, and making sure the Director, Assistant Director and Program Administrator stay caffeinated and sane (while sometimes adding to their insanity). We watched you work on your senior project for two Januarys Jace; we had no doubt you would complete it ahead of schedule! Citizen Science, and especially the Director, will miss you very much. Go do great things!!

Since 2019, the Citizen Science program at Bard College has focused on water contamination as our scientific lens to develop our students science literacy. The topic of PCB contamination in our local Hudson River was our original focus. That problem is not gone, and two of our local congressmen are working across the aisle to ensure GE continues to remediate. Thank you Rep. Pat Ryan (D-NY) and Rep. Marc Molinaro (R-NY) for your continued work on this matter. https://patryan.house.gov/media/press-releases/hudson-river-5-year-review-approaching-congressmen-ryan-and-molinaro-urge-epa

“This is the time to remember
Cause it will not last forever
These are the days to hold on to
Cause we won't, although we'll want to
This is the time
But time is gonna change…”

Spring is a glorious time at Bard College. Hold onto these moments to get you through the winters…
