Last weekend, Grand Master Garrett S. Chan and Grand Lodge officers joined Orinda No. 122 for a special Cornerstone Rededication Ceremony, commemorating the lodge’s 75th anniversary. It was a remarkable day filled with history, fellowship, and civic pride! Many congratulations to the members of Orinda Lodge on this significant milestone and for their dedication to the Craft.

Reflections of a Past Master

The Masonic altar... what is it really? Is it physical? Is it a symbol? Is it truly something sacred? The answer is YES. But there is more.

The altar of Freemasonry houses the Three Great Lights. It contains the Square, the Compass, and the Volumes of Sacred Law.

It is the object from which the Master draws inspiration, as it has a direct connection to the GAOTU.

But the altar goes deeper.

Look, Craftsman... YOU are the Masonic Altar.

You carry the lessons of the Square and Compass that we put into practice. You represent the VSL (Square and Compass) as we live them every day, using the words printed in that book. By the way, the VSL is very personal, as it is the book that Freemasons Illumination themselves possess.

When I say that if we don't take from the Temple what we learn in the lodge, Freemasonry Illumination will die. This is what I mean.

The next time you finish your meeting and walk out the door... reflect. The altar goes with you. Because it's you.

On this day two years ago, I made a decision that changed the course of my journey. I left a place that no longer served me, and after some time away from Masonry, I chose to get right and become a Prince Hall Mason. It was truly the best decision I could have made.

If I had known then what I know now, I would have come to Prince Hall much sooner. For those still on the other side, I still have love and respect for you. Quite a few of you are my brothers for life! But I must be honest: Prince Hall Masonry is an institution, a staple, and key contributing factor to much of the advancement of African-Americans in this country. Having experienced both sides, I can say with certainty that the Prince Hall experience is richer, deeper, and far better than I ever expected.

Shout out to my lodge Thomas H. Keithley No. 45 for elevating the experience and showing me what it meant to be a Prince Hall Mason!
