USNA Music Department The Musical Activities Department is the primary source of Fine Arts education for the USNA Brigade.

The Musical Activities Department is the primary source of Fine Arts education for the Brigade of Midshipmen. Throughout the Academy's 175 year history, Musical Activities have played a crucial role in the lives and development of midshipmen who have found academic enrichment, leadership opportunities, inspiration, and camaraderie in its varied offerings. In a single year, Music Department ensembl

es will perform for the Brigade and thousands of concert attendees at home, throughout the nation, and around the world. An estimated 150,000 people will attend a live performance by our midshipmen each year -- and millions will watch on television. It is with honor, pride and distinction that the Musical Activities Department represents the United States, the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and the United States Naval Academy.

On April 18th, the USNA Midshipmen faced off against the St. John's Johnnies at the 42nd Annual Annapolis Cup croquet match.

Our outstanding team of Midshipmen emerged victorious, due (no doubt!) to their musical advantage: encouragement from USNA's own Mariachi Marineros! ¡Olé!

Army-Navy Halftime!

Our outstanding Drum & Bugle Corps collaborated with members of the USNA Glee Club and USNA Band to present a spectacular halftime performance for the 2025 Army-Navy Game. Joining the Corps were Glee Club vocal soloists Midshipman 1/C Allison Boertlein and Midshipman 3/C Owen Broussard, who shook the audiences nerves and rattled their brains while members of the United States Naval Academy Band's "Electric Brigade" brought the energy level right into the Danger Zone. Lighting support from PixMob added a striking visual element. BZ to all!

MESSIAH COUNTDOWN!

It's that age-old question on everyone's minds at this special time of year. Should you get your USNA Messiah tickets for December 6th or December 7th? Even Handel wrestled with this dilemma, as this recently-discovered photograph clearly demonstrates.

Whichever date you chooses, you're sure to enjoy a fantastic performance!

MESSIAH TRIVIA!
While much is often made of Messiah's London premiere (including the lore of King George II standing for the Hallelujah Chorus), the actual premiere was given under much more modest circumstances at noon on Good Friday in 1742 at the Music Hall on Fishamble Street in Dublin.

The performance was given for the benefit of Mercer's Hospital, the Charitable Infirmary, and prisoner's debt relief. So many tickets were sold that gentlemen were asked to leave their swords at home, and ladies were asked not to wear hoop skirts. Over 700 people squeezed into the small musick hall, resulting £400 being raised for the associated causes and freeing 142 indebted prisoners.

Today, all that remains of the original structure is the gateway arch, along with a plaque commemorating the auspicious premiere.

There's still time to purchase your tickets for this year's Messiah performance at the Naval Academy Chapel THIS WEEKEND, Saturday December 6th at 7p.m. and Sunday December 7th at 3 p.m.

As a nod to both historical precedent and the spacing between chapel pews, we kindly ask gentlemen to leave their swords at home, and ladies to please refrain from wearing hoop skirts.
