English classes at The Valley are places where stories come alive. Whether reading fiction or poetry, writing and editing journalistic copy, or creating stories for the stage, screen, or page, English majors have the opportunity to interact with and create their own narratives. Students choose a pathway of study in literature, communications, creative writing, theater, or secondary education, but

the basis for all pathways is the study of literature: imaginative, complex, and challenging texts in a variety of genres. Our goal is to teach students to write, speak, and think more effectively.

Friday marked the Fall ‘26 return of our PROCESS & PRODUCTION studio !! // Most Fridays 11-4p in our fantastic wood-floored makers space!// This Friday, students worked on all sorts of things: visible mending, needlefelting, costume making, jewelry, and other fun stuff.

The Process & Production Studio = drop-in/gathering for book arts, collaborative & individual tapestry weaving, yarn-spinning tutorials, knitting, & crocheting, and more.

This, as part of our broader interest in the extraordinary benefits of DIY, analogue, making things slowly, together, purposefully. Broadly we care about \*\*Slow making/fashion, \*\*Slow foods (farm to table), \*\*Slowing as a tool for innovation, \*\*Slowing as a tool for mindfulness, \*\*Slowing as a tool for wellness, \*\*Slowing as a tool for sustainability, \*\*Slowing as a tool for community building, \*\*Slowing as a tool for student-centered, collaborative, transformative, experiential education in and beyond the classroom. ((internship update)) Congrats to Kohai Pavan ‘28 --double major in English & Creative Writing with a minor in Music--who earned the position of Archival Assistant at our very own Bishop Library!

While learning about archival best practices and LVC’s archive, Kohai will also be drawing materials from the archive to assemble a display showcasing the history of LVC’s Physical Therapy program in honor of its 20th anniversary!

((recent grad update!!)) Last time we checked in with Lucey Walton ‘25 --double major in English & Creative Arts--she was finishing up her practicum in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and teaching English to students from Taiwan.

Now, Lucey is working and living in Ireland. She is currently working at the beautiful Adare Manor in County Limerick. In her own words: “I have been living in Ireland for 6 months now, and the time has flown by! Working at Adare Manor has been an amazing introduction into careers in luxury hospitality, where I have also been able to develop a new passion for bartending and mixology! Although I am working in a different field, I am still very interested in global education, as one of my favorite parts of working in hospitality is getting to meet and work with people from all over the world. From focusing my senior year capstone project on Irish superstitions and history to moving to Ireland less than a year later, it has been incredible to see how my time at LVC and in the English & Creative Writing Dept. has come full circle!”

Wed. Where Are They Now?

Hello Everyone!

My name is Mike B (class 21+23). I work as a family therapist for children who are at high risk for out-of-home-placement. My preferred modalities are existential and narrative therapy. I enjoy the frog pond I recently dug earlier this year and creating music based on pictures my fiancé sends me.

My story is filled with subplots that somehow converged into my path of studying behavioral health management at a doctoral level. Even writing out “doctoral” is a shocking experience for me. I left my undergrad with a 2.7 GPA. Somehow, I was accepted into my graduate program. Determined to change the narrative of being labeled a “slacker,” I gave it my best. I graduated by the skin of my teeth. So why a doctorate? (A question I ask myself routinely) “Why milk is white, why holly is green." Why anything?” It may be written, but who wrote it? Right now I’m writing. Who is writing for you? I want the story to get better for everyone. I can do that by writing a better system than what we have now.

I am not motivated. I am determined.

(( Internship update )) Congrats to Phoebe Bidelspach ‘27 --triple major in English & Communications, Creative Arts, and Creative Writing--who earned a position as Artist Intern at SCC Tattoos (Harrisburg)! “As an intern, I will perform a variety of tasks and exercises, including shadowing the tattooing process, interacting with customers, helping to maintain the shop and workstations, and creating new designs to expand my portfolio. I'm so excited to meet cool new people, form industry connections, and expand my design portfolio under the guidance of a professional tattoo artist!” Through close mentorship and our extensive LVC network--which includes our Breen Center for Career & Professional Development--100% of English & Communications and Creative Writing students who want an internship, get one (some earn multiple internships). Wed. Where Are They Now? (Grad Update!) Jackie Chicalese, English Major ('18—has it been that long?!), is currently a PhD candidate in Composition and Rhetoric at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She passed her comprehensive exams at the end of Spring 2026 and will be starting her dissertation work on centering a return to process pedagogy during an age of production. She's thankful that her mentors at UNL, much like her mentors at LVC, have provided her with models for teacher-scholars who work—and revel!—in the intersections of the critical and creative. In addition to teaching first-year writing classes and classes in literacy studies, she has also served (and is currently re-serving) as Assistant Director of Composition, assisting with programmatic processions and mentoring new Graduate Teaching Assistants. Her scholarly work has appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as *Writers: Craft and Context* and *Peitho.*

Jackie also currently serves as Program Assistant to the Community Literacies Collaboratory (CLC), which facilitates and supports literacy partnerships and programming in Northwest Arkansas and beyond. She began working with the CLC as a Graduate Assistant in 2022 while completing her MFA in Creative Writing (poetry) at the University of Arkansas and has since supported/coordinated two literacy symposiums and other event programming, such as Possibilities Hubs and poetry readings and workshops. Jackie attributes her preparation for this role to her time at LVC, where she served as Assistant Director to Writing: A Life, which hosts visiting writers and events on campus.

During her MFA she served as Poetry Editor for *The Arkansas International* and then later as an Associate Poetry Editor for *Iron Horse Literary Review.* She's trying to still carve out time for her creative writing amidst her academic work—and might have to finally resign to joining Dr. Holly M. Wendt's morning writing club. Her poetry has appeared in the *New England Review,* *Gulf Coast,* *Salt Hill Journal,* the *Florida Review,* and elsewhere.
