English classes at The Valley are places where stories come alive. Whether reading fiction or poetry, writing and editing journalistic copy, or creating stories for the stage, screen, or page, English majors have the opportunity to interact with and create their own narratives. Students choose a pathway of study in literature, communications, creative writing, theater, or secondary education, but the basis for all pathways is the study of literature: imaginative, complex, and challenging texts in a variety of genres. Our goal is to teach students to write, speak, and think more effectively.

Wed. Where Are They Now? Izzy Ortega ‘23 -- double major in English and Political Science -- is currently in her second year as a law student at the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law, an associate editor of IDEA: the Law Review of the Pierce Center for Intellectual Property, and a Legal Writing TA!

Alongside this exciting work, Izzy is a Daniel Webster Scholar. In her words, “Through completion of this rigorous and first-of-its-kind program, I will automatically be admitted to the New Hampshire Bar without taking the traditional bar exam. … The program is made up of a practice-focused curriculum designed to make us ready to practice law upon graduation. It is an honors program that comes with extensive practical experience and training. There is no other program like this in the US. It is very hard but going to be well worth it!”

thanks again to the amazing Gabi Swain (Philly-based improv comic) and Andy Miller of Swear Jar Jamboree and TableToptional for visiting Dr. Nyk Cialini’s Gaming & Communal Storytelling class last week!

Swear Jar Jamboree is a super cool indie comedy and improv festival (also located in Philly), and TableToptional is a one-of-a-kind live comedy “actual-play” … meaning a live ttrpg where dice rolls are replaced by real-life challenges!

these awesome folks spoke to our class about storytelling and community building through gaming and using improv as a skill in ttrpgs, general storytelling, and more broadly, in life! really exciting ideas that develop our work and push us to think differently within and beyond the classroom :)

((( Internship Update! ))) Congrats to Cassidy Landis ‘27 -- Social Justice & Civic Engagement major with minors in Political Science and Music ( Lebanon Valley College Music Department ) -- who recently earned an internship with the PA Democratic Party ! Cassidy will be working on-site at the Lebanon County Democratic Committee office phone banking and knocking doors to recruit volunteers and encourage voting in the upcoming PA election. She also will be operating ActionID political and advocacy tools, and learning about campaign strategies and canvass launching. “I'm so excited to leave my comfort zone and get some concrete experience both in working internal systems and connecting with my community for a cause. A: Sharing what fills and intrigues my mind. I also love that there’s so much I can do with it!

((ENG-Secondary Ed Alumni - Back to School Edition!!)) Maggie Kergick ‘19 -- English major with a specialization in Secondary Education -- is currently in her 8th (!!!) year of teaching!

Maggie is teaching 7th grade English Language Arts and Social Emotional Learning at Mahanoy Area High School, all while also advising the class and co-advising the Diversity Club. One of the club’s most recent projects was collecting books for each elementary school student in their district in honor of Dolly Parton’s legacy of promoting kindness and literacy.

Maggie was also a Fulbright scholar, receiving an English Teaching Assistant grant to teach English in Slovakia, which inspired her to pursue a Master’s Degree in Multicultural Education with a focus on English as a Second Language.

We asked Maggie for advice for current students. She told us, “My advice is to step outside of your comfort zone and to work hard to build a community wherever you end up. It is so much easier to achieve your dreams and goals when you are surrounded by support and positivity and it feels good to be a part of something bigger than yourself.”

(( Internship update )) Congrats to Ky Vargas ‘30 -- double major in Creative Writing and English & Communications -- who earned a position as a Social Media Intern for LVC’s Women’s Basketball team! “Basically, I get to go to practices and work with the team and coaches to produce content, such as short-form videos and photos! I'll end up downloading that footage and taking it home with me to edit it, getting it ready for posting! I'm most excited to work with the team and the social media team! It's a lot of new people, which I'd usually be scared of, but everyone's been very pleasant and welcoming!”

Through close mentorship and our extensive LVC network-- which includes our Breen Center for Career & Professional Development--100% of English & Communications and Creative Writing students who want an internship, get one (some earn multiple internships).

(( Fall 26 Course Highlight!)) Gaming & Communal Storytelling runs this fall and again features all sorts exciting things in and beyond the classroom. Students explore games and gaming as a form of storytelling across platforms including video games and tabletop roll playing games / RPGs [ttrpgs])!

Dr. Nyk Cialini has previously invited many amazing folks to visit this course, such as indie gaming store (located in Lanc, PA and super awesome) and linguist and indie game designer Kathryn Hymes. Students also created a microRPG anthology titled “Roll for Class” that’s available for download/purchase at itch.io (link in bio!)

This year, the course welcomes Philly-based improv comic and organizer of Swear Jar Jamboree and TableToptional Gabi Swain; creator of ttrpg [The Zone] Raphael D’Amico; co-designer of Kids on Bikes ttrpg Jonathan-Gilmour-Long; and LVC’s very own Director of Educational Technology, Christine Iannicelli! Students also will again be making their own games and creating an anthology available at itch.io!
