Fox Valley Technical College has been named Wisconsin’s Outstanding Post-Secondary Agriculture Program by the Wisconsin Association of Agriculture Educators. The Agriculture department received the distinction for establishing an innovative partnership with Case IH and Service Motor Company, its commitment to new technologies and hands-on learning labs, and producing outstanding graduate employment rates for students. The newly expanded and renovated Service Motor Company Agriculture Center at Fox Valley Technical College was made possible by Service Motor Company’s donation of $1.1 million to the Fox Valley Technical College Foundation, Inc., in the form of scholarships, equipment—including the latest Case IH vehicles—and monetary support. As a result, our agriculture-related programs can now accommodate more students, offering the newest technology, and provide more opportunities than ever before.

The Animal Science Fundamentals class traveled to Hortonville to visit Fenway Friesians. Shelly and Scott gave an excellent talk sharing their passion for Friesian horses and the numerous genetic challenges the horses face. We were able to visit Angie in their newly opened Kelnhofer Friesian Genomics Lab where they collect, process and preserve Friesian DNA to support current and future Friesian research. We met some of the horses including 2 cloned horses, one of which is just 8 weeks old and cute as a button.

Thank you to Scott and Shelly from Fenway Foundation for Friesian Horses for opening your stable to our students.

Ag Crop Production students got hands-on experience with tillage this week.

Paired with a residue management lab, students evaluated how tillage practices impact crop residue left behind after harvest. Connecting classroom concepts with hands-on field experience helps students understand the role tillage plays in crop production and residue management.

For our former students…

Remember when.....

The Introduction to Soils students enjoying soil profile descriptions. Only two pits were filled with water this year. The mosquito to student ratio was a meager 2:1.

Notice…van 702 still survives in the background. 😜

The FVTC Beef Production and Management course students attended World Beef Expo held at the Wisconsin State Fair Grounds in West Allis. World Beef Expo offers open and junior show competition in a variety of beef cattle breeds over 5 days. A few of the students in the course showed their own animals with great success, congratulations Kaylee & Julia!

On our way home, Josh Scharf from S&H Livestock Enterprises, LLC, opened the farm gate and welcomed us for a tour. The cow-calf operation consists of about 130-head of Hereford-Angus cows on intensively grazed pastures. Part of the herd is grazed on neighboring DNR land in a joint effort to restore bird habitat.

Josh taught the students about their methods to sell feeder calves (weaned calves around 600-800pounds) that are from healthy independent cows, with high marbling and good growth, all the while sustaining and improving the land they grow upon. Josh uses genetics, thoughtful facilities and equipment as well as efficient management to raise quality cattle solely on pasture.

The Fox Valley Technical College World Dairy Expo booth just received a special visit today from Governor Tony Evers. Not even the governor can resist a little Plinko session with our Agriculture instructors Kimberly Schmidt, Mike Fassbender, and Nick Schneider.

FVTC Agronomy students joined students from across Wisconsin at the WPVGA Student Career Development Fall Harvest Field Day!

Students visited Alsum and Gumz Farms to learn how pumpkins, onions, and potatoes make their way from the field to the market. Students wrapped up the day hearing from industry experts about various careers in agriculture and the pathways that led them there.

Thank you to the Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association for organizing this field day and to Alsum Farms & Produce and Gumz Farms for hosting us and sharing their farms with our students!

Our Animal Science students had a great opportunity to learn about farm safety during several recent tours at Milk Source LLC!

With guidance from field expert Manuel Garcia, students explored key safety practices and discussed important aspects of dairy management. One of the highlights of the tour was watching a large silage pile being constructed on-site, giving students a firsthand look at the scale and teamwork involved in feeding a dairy herd.

A big thank you to Milk Source, LLC for sharing their knowledge and helping provide our students with this valuable real-world learning experience!
