Spanish Dual Language Program

MODL is excited to highlight a new partnership between The University of Texas at Arlington and Arlington ISD that gives students in AISD’s Dual Language program the opportunity to begin earning UTA college credit while still in high school. Through the Spanish Dual Language Program, participating students can earn college credit at no cost, with tuition, fees, textbooks, and other approved expenses covered by Arlington ISD. The program is currently in its initial stage and is expected to expand to more students in the future. This initiative creates an important pathway for bilingual students to continue developing their Spanish while preparing for college and exploring opportunities at UTA.

Modern Languages Awards 500+ Global Seals of Biliteracy at UTA

The Department of Modern Languages (MODL) has reached a major milestone, awarding more than 500 Global Seals of Biliteracy to UTA students—an achievement that highlights the linguistic diversity and global strengths of the Maverick community.

The Global Seal of Biliteracy is an internationally recognized micro-credential that certifies functional fluency in two or more languages. By opening testing to all students and offering proficiency assessments in more than 40 languages, MODL has created an accessible credential that validates real-world language skills beyond grades or credit hours.

For many students—particularly heritage speakers—earning the Global Seal has been described as deeply affirming and even life-changing. The credential can be added to résumés, graduate school applications, and LinkedIn profiles, strengthening career readiness across disciplines.

Rios following her passions as a double major in EES and Spanish translation and interpretation

Isabella Rios, an Honors College senior, forged a unique and interdisciplinary journey at UTA through her passions for environmental science and languages. Why it matters: Rios discovered geology in her freshman year and was drawn to the hands-on fieldwork. She now studies geology with a concentration in environmental science and added a second major in Spanish translation and interpretation following a summer study abroad program in Salamanca, Spain. Going deeper: Since her sophomore year, she has conducted research in Un-Jung Kim’s lab, analyzing contaminants such as PAHs, PFAs, PCBs, and microplastics. Her honors thesis focuses on disinfection byproducts in local children’s splash parks. She has presented at conferences, earned major scholarships, and participated in programs including McNair, inSTEM, I-Engage, and CU Boulder’s SMART program, where she won the Best Visual Poster Presentation award.
