"What should we embrace, and what must we never lose, as mediation enters the age of artificial intelligence?"
Dr. Alpaslan Ozerdem, Dean of the Carter School, delivered the keynote address at the Virginia Mediation Network’s 2026 Fall Conference, which explored how AI can help analyze complex conflicts, identify patterns, improve access to information, and support informed decision-making. He explained that, while embracing these opportunities and letting go of outdated practices, we must preserve human empathy, trust, ethical judgment, genuine dialogue, and an understanding of the emotions, relationships, and lived experiences behind conflict. The future of mediation is not a choice between human mediators and intelligent machines, but an opportunity to use technology to become better mediators without losing what makes us human.

The Carter School is proud to celebrate two members of our community who received honors at the 2026 Peace and Justice Studies Association Annual Conference.

✨ Isabella Cuevas (BA '24, MS '25) was awarded the Next Generation Peacemaker Award, recognizing individuals who demonstrate skill, passion, and vision in the pursuit of peace.

✨ Emeritus Professor Christopher Mitchell received the Howard Zinn Lifetime Achievement Award, which honors outstanding lifelong contributions to the field of peace and justice studies.

We congratulate Isabella and Christopher on these well-deserved achievements and thank them for their contributions to advancing peacebuilding, dialogue, and justice.

We were honored to host the 2026 Peace and Justice Studies Association (PJSA) Annual Conference this past weekend.

The conference brought together scholars, practitioners, activists, educators, and students from across the peace and justice field to engage with some of the most pressing challenges facing communities around the world.

As a leading institution in peace and conflict resolution, we are proud not only to have provided a home for this year's gathering, but also to help foster the conversations that move our field forward, connecting scholarship with practice, elevating diverse perspectives, and reflecting collectively on the future of peace and justice work.
