UTA CSE students explored this question during a special lecture with Justin Thomas and Johnny Seay from Decision Analyst, a market research firm!

As Vice President of IT, Justin brought his experience as a UTA alumnus to the conversation, while Johnny shared his perspective as a Full Stack Developer and DevOps Engineer. Together, they gave students an inside look at how AI is changing the tech industry and what it could mean for the future of work. 💻

Decoding nonhuman communication is no longer science fiction. It is the next frontier of artificial intelligence, and UT Arlington CSE is leading the charge.

Dr. Kenny Zhu and his researchers at the Arlington Computational Linguistics Lab (ACL2) have published a collaborative survey paper, "A Preview of Computational Animal Linguistics," in the journal ACM Computing Surveys.

This milestone further cements UTA CSE's position as a world-class hub for computational animal communication research. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the collaborative bridge between graduate scholars and undergraduate researchers. The authorship team brings together Zhu's graduate students alongside undergraduate scholars from the NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates program at UTA.

Through hands-on summer research experiences, REU participants at UTA don't just learn cutting-edge tools in machine learning and natural language processing. They contribute directly to field-defining, high-impact publications alongside faculty.

What does it take to stand out among tens of thousands of AI researchers worldwide? 🌍 Ask Krishna Khadka, a doctoral student in Computer Science and Engineering at UTA!

His paper co-authored with Professor Yu Lei earned a rare oral presentation at NeurIPS, placing in the top fraction of a percent of global submissions! 🏆 The research was developed alongside collaborators Raghu N. Kacker and D. Richard Kuhn from the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

The paper introduces DD-CAM, a tool that acts like a precision magnifying glass for computer vision systems. By applying software debugging logic, it strips away visual noise so developers can see the exact image details an AI uses to make decisions. This breakthrough brings real-world impact to self-driving safety and medical imaging precision! 🚗🏥

A true homegrown Maverick success story, Khadka earned his bachelor’s degree at UTA, entered the direct Ph.D. program, and co-founded an award-winning startup through MavPitch. 🚀

👀 Technical interviews are evolving!

UTA CSE students recently joined UTA ACM for a watch party of the CRA Member’s Circle event, A Student’s Guide to Navigating the Technical Interview. The panel featured experts with firsthand experience designing, conducting and navigating technical interviews.

The discussion explored how AI-assisted coding and changing technical roles are reshaping interviews, along with what employers are looking for and practical strategies students can use to prepare for internships and early-career opportunities. 💻✨

How do you track multiple moving targets when real world sensors glitch, face interference, or lose line of sight? UTA computer science researchers are building adaptive algorithms that solve these high-stakes operational bottlenecks. 🛰️⚡

Huge congratulations to Assistant Professor Dr. Debashri Roy on securing a $460K research award from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research for their project, Dynamic Multimodal Fusion for Multi-target Identification and Tracking!

Most tracking tools get confused when bad weather, darkness, or tricky obstacles get in the way. Dr. Roy and her team are teaching computers how to look through different kinds of digital eyes at the exact same time, so they can keep sight of moving objects without getting tricked or lost! 🎯

This three-year grant highlights how UTA CSE faculty and researchers are translating complex sensor fusion and machine learning into direct solutions for national defense, autonomous navigation, and public safety. 🌐🚀

🤝 Bringing AI and human expertise together to support child welfare

Please join us in congratulating Associate Professor Shirin Nilizadeh on serving as a Co-PI and the research and technical lead for UTA’s participation in a new three-year, $600,000 project funded through the Administration for Children and Families’ Predictive Analytics in Child Welfare Demonstration Grants Program.

Led by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS), the project is an interdisciplinary collaboration with UTA’s School of Social Work and its Child Welfare Research Center.

Dr. Nilizadeh will guide UTA’s research and technical work exploring how AI and predictive analytics can be used responsibly to support child-welfare professionals. The UTA team will study case information and written records to identify patterns and factors that may help inform decision-making. A key focus of the project will be developing approaches that are transparent, fair, and designed to complement professional expertise.

Congratulations to Dr. Nilizadeh and the entire interdisciplinary team on this important work at the intersection of AI, social services, and responsible technology! 🤠💙🧡
