🎓✨ Sankofa Send-Off Celebration 2026 ✨🎓

Last Wednesday, May 6, the Black Male Institute (BMI) proudly hosted our annual Sankofa Send-Off Celebration, a powerful evening rooted in reflection, recognition, and community.

With over 45 attendees in person and additional guests joining virtually, we were honored to celebrate our students alongside AACC leadership, including President Dr. Dawn Lindsay, members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, family, and community supporters.

This special tradition recognizes our students as they take the next step in their journey—whether graduating, transferring, joining the armed services, or pursuing new opportunities. Grounded in the meaning of *Sankofa*—to look back and move forward—we honored not just where they’re going, but the strength, growth, and resilience that brought them here.

A highlight of the evening included the presentation of Kente stoles, symbolizing legacy, achievement, and the continuation of each student’s story as they were inducted into the BMI Alumni Network. Students received a certificate and gift bag as a token of appreciation.

We also took time to honor Dr. Lindsay for her exceptional leadership and lasting impact on AACC as she prepares for retirement—an especially meaningful moment for our community.

💙 Once BMI, always BMI.
Congratulations to our brothers—keep rising, keep reaching back, and keep moving forward.

🎉 Celebrating the Crosby Scholars! 🎉

On Wednesday, May 6, SASP proudly joined in celebrating the Crosby Marketing Scholar End-of-Year Celebration, held in the CADE Multipurpose Room with nearly 30 attendees.

The afternoon began with inspiring welcome remarks from Scholar Advisor Dr. Curtis Spencer and AACC President Dr. Dawn Lindsay, setting the tone for a meaningful celebration of student achievement, partnership, and growth.

Scholars had the opportunity to showcase their year-long projects, developed in collaboration with their mentors from Crosby Marketing Communications. For the first time in the program’s history, the cohort also completed a collaborative group project, highlighting the power of teamwork and innovation.

The event was filled with fellowship, connection, and reflection among scholars, mentors, faculty, and staff. Mr. Raymond Crosby shared his appreciation for the continued partnership with AACC and SASP and announced that the program will continue for another year—an exciting milestone for future scholars.

Closing remarks from SASP Director Rayna Simon emphasized the importance of community, collaboration, and continued partnership in creating transformative opportunities for our students.

A special thank you to Dr. Curtis Spencer for his vision, leadership, and commitment to student success. Through intentional design and accessible learning outcomes, scholars gained resume-ready leadership skills and real-world experience that will carry them forward.

👏🏾 This year’s cohort exemplified what the Crosby Experience is all about—excellence, growth, and preparation for future leadership.

✨ The Spring Forum Breakfast did what it always does—bring the energy, the connection, and the community. One of the most beloved traditions of POSCH, and this year? It absolutely delivered.

Students stepped into a powerful space to engage directly with the president and senior leadership—sharing their voices, their stories, and their visions for what’s possible. 💬

It wasn’t just a breakfast… it was a moment. A space where ideas flowed, perspectives were honored, and real connections were made.

Now that’s what building community looks like. 💫

This past Friday, BMI took a powerful step into possibility as we traveled to Morgan State University—*The National Treasure*—for Explore Morgan Day! 💙🧡

Our students engaged in dynamic exploration breakout sessions, connected during an impactful personal session with Morgan MILE and EVOLVE, and explored opportunities at the organization fair. The energy was unmatched with incredible performances from the band, choir, fraternities and sororities, and dance teams!

And of course—we had to stop for lunch at Sunny's Sub Shop to refuel and fellowship 🍽️

We wrapped up the day with a personalized campus tour, allowing our students to truly envision themselves in the next chapter of their journey.

This wasn’t just a visit—it was exposure, inspiration, and a reminder that their future is limitless. 🖤 HBCU Culture ✊🏿

We are incredibly proud of Victor Aigbedion, one of our outstanding SASP and BMI students, for being named a 2026 National DREAM Scholar by Achieving the Dream! 🎉

Victor, a senior at Glen Burnie High School and a dual-enrolled student at Anne Arundel Community College, has made history as the first high school student ever selected as a DREAM Scholar. This prestigious recognition highlights students who demonstrate leadership, resilience, and a commitment to advancing opportunity and success in their communities.

An immigrant from Nigeria, Victor’s journey reflects determination, leadership, and a commitment to uplifting others. From serving as a student speaker at convocation, to leading as Outreach Director of the Ambassadors Campus Team, and being active in numerous academic honor societies, Victor continues to represent both his high school and college communities with excellence.

Victor’s story is a powerful reminder that leadership, voice, and success can come from any background. As he prepares to graduate with both his high school diploma and a college certificate in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, we celebrate the impact he is already making and the bright future ahead of him.

Your SASP and BMI family is proud of you, Victor. Keep shining and inspiring others along the way! 🌟

🎓✨ SASP at the MCCCSAO Best Practices Conference!

Today, members of the Student Achievement and Success Program (SASP) joined colleagues from across Anne Arundel Community College at the MCCCSAO Best Practices Conference, sharing innovative strategies and celebrating leadership in community college student success.

We are proud of our team members who presented engaging workshops highlighting the power of inclusive practices and transformative learning:

🔹 Dr. Antione D. Tomlin and Kenneth Gilliard presented “Belonging by Design: Centering Student Voice through Inclusive Learning.” Their session explored how institutions can intentionally design spaces and supports that elevate student voice, cultivate belonging, and strengthen engagement for diverse learners.

🔹 Rayna Simon and Dr. Curtis Spencer presented “Learning Outcomes: From Transaction to Transformation,” focusing on how institutions can move beyond transactional approaches to student engagement and instead create meaningful, transformational learning experiences.

👏 A special congratulations to Rayna Simon, who was also recognized at the conference for completing the Community College Leadership Institute cohort.

We are proud to see AACC faculty and staff sharing knowledge, building community, and advancing best practices that support student achievement across Maryland’s community colleges. 💪📚

🎨 Creativity in Action at the AACC Arts Hub!

The POSCH Scholars recently spent time exploring the new AACC Arts Hub, an arts integration studio space designed to spark creativity and expression. Guided by Laura Pasquini, Visual Arts Navigator and Co-Lead of the Arts Hub, students dove into the incredible collection of art supplies and began creating symbolic self-portraits.

Using collage as their medium, students thoughtfully selected images, textures, and ideas that reflected their **identity, experiences, and personal stories**. The activity offered a powerful opportunity for reflection, creativity, and connection.

It was a fantastic experience, and the scholars are already looking forward to returning to the **Open Studio** to continue exploring their artistic voices! ✂️🖼️✨
