Dr Yue Hillon teaches our MBA capstone course - where our students put the culmination of their knowledge gained in the program to use with local companies! Congratulations Yue, we know how much you deserve this award!

Paul A. Reid Distinguished Service Award for Faculty
Yue Hillon, recipient of the Reid Distinguished Service Award for Faculty, has quickly become an outstanding member of the WCU community in her four years on campus, Morrison-Shetlar said.

Hillon has voluntarily contributed many hours to at least four major planning initiatives, Morrison-Shetlar said. “Her efforts in these initiatives are consistent, high quality and selfless. She incorporates her students in this work and affords them opportunities to engage with service while applying the principles of strategic management learned under her tutelage. We would not have been successful in navigating very politically charged landscapes without her deft, diplomatic and collegial skill,” Morrison-Shetlar said.

A frequent question we field is, "do I really have to take the test?" (Referring to the GMAT or GRE standardized tests.) There is definitely mixed research on the efficacy of these types of tests but one thing we do know: commitment and dedication have shown to definitely be two indicators for success among our students in graduate school!

It's spring semester orientation day! Busy getting ready to 'orient' the 9 new students we welcome this spring. As always, very grateful to the students and alumni who agree to come help make it meaningful. Our orientation always includes words of wisdom and advice from current students as well as thoughts from alumni on how the program was meaningful to them and their career. It takes a team and we appreciate you all!

Dear college student: Get an education, not just a degree

This is an excellent reminder. Most of these might be geared more specifically to undergraduate students but others apply just as much to those pursuing graduate level professional degrees.

My favorite: "Talk to people. Colleges put a lot of time and money into recruiting a diverse group of students, to say nothing of faculty and staff. This isn’t just to make the brochures look nice. You’re meant to learn something from all of these fellow travelers. They’ve lived in ways you haven’t, been to places you haven’t, read and seen and done things you haven’t. Ask them about it, and listen."

Every day I'm reminded how our people - our faculty, our students, our staff members - are one of WCU's greatest assets. Take full advantage!

Eric Johnson: Thousands of new students are settling into North Carolina colleges and universities this week. Most will have already endured a formal orientation and received all manner of official guidance, but there are some informal practices that can make the difference between receiving a degre…

What Students Can Learn From Taking Financial Risks in Class

Excellent example of experiential learning, and not far off from what one student recently told incoming new students at our MBA spring orientation: I can make a million dollar mistake at work, which will hurt my company and risk my job, or I can make it here, in the classroom, and learn from it with little risk.

At a California middle school, parents and the community mobilized to save a cooking program from budget cuts. Now the teachers have tasked the students with turning the program into a successful small business,
