In 1932, S. R. Ranganathan proposed five laws of libraries, the second of which states “Every reader [their] book.” One of the most powerful feelings is finding yourself in the pages of a book. It celebrates you!

Censorship can take away finding your book. This week highlights celebrating our freedom to read, explore, research, grow, and learn; keep on celebrating Bulldogs!

We mentioned yesterday that it’s not just books that are challenged and sometimes banned. 53 drag queen story hours across 27 states were challenged/banned.

Things like hate mail, petitions, social media campaigns, and lawsuits were directed at the performers, administrators, and library workers.

Tomorrow, we’ll talk about the importance of collections without censorship.

Keep celebrating your freedom to read, explore, and create Bulldogs!

Today for Banned Books Week, we’re talking about semantics. A ban and a challenge are two different things! The ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom defines a challenge as an “attempt to remove or restrict materials or services based on content” and a ban as the “removal of materials or cancellation of services based on content.”

It’s more than just books that are banned. Out of the 377 challenges that the OIF tracked in 2019, only 56% of those were related to books.

Tomorrow we’ll highlight some of the other challenges and bans.

Keep celebrating your freedom to read and explore, Bulldogs!

While we couldn’t have our traditional Blind Date with a Banned Book display this year, we are still celebrating our freedom to read from wherever we may be!

This year’s theme is Censorship is a Dead End; Find Your Freedom to Read. Censorship limits access to information and in turn limits knowledge and exploration. Libraries provide maps and navigation through the myriad of information out there!

Throughout this week, we’ll be sharing information about banned and/or challenged titles over the last year, highlight historically banned/challenged titles, and ask questions!

Celebrate your freedom to read, Bulldogs! #bannedbooksweek #uncavl

Hi everyone! I left a mustard yellow sweater in one of the main floor corner study desks on Friday and if anyone finds it I would be so grateful and appreciative, as it’s my favorite (and only) work sweater. Thank you! If you find it, please email me [email protected] or you can message me on here.
