The Sustainability Story

Sustainability Studies graduate Yulia Shaffer, Operations Coordinator for Energy Savers Network, was featured in this video working with Blue Horizons Project to increase sustainability in low-income areas. We are proud to contribute to the impact our alumni have in our community!

Yulia Shaffer, originally from Baku, Azerbaijan, first entered the nonprofit world in 2016. She is currently the operations manager at an Asheville, NC-based organization called Energy Savers Network. The nonprofit is dedicated to helping low-income and minority communities improve health, safety, and energy efficiency.

Yulia is now deeply immersed in helping the surrounding regions of Asheville, NC lower their overall energy burden. Rather than donating money, Yulia and her colleagues at Energy Savers Network believe in mobilizing volunteers, donors, and community partners to create real change through things like handing out LED bulbs, installing weather stripping on doors, fixing gaps and holes, and providing families with things they need to lessen the need for energy.

Writing student Dr. Dan Waters is hanging up his surgery tools to write full time. Our students come from all walks of life!

Dr. Daniel Waters, long-time Cardiovascular Surgeon at Mason City Clinic and MercyOne North Iowa has announced his retirement from surgical practice effective April 15th, 2019. In a letter to the Mason City Clinic, Dr. Waters wrote:

"After thirty years of doing cardiac and thoracic surgery, twenty-nine of them here in Mason City and the last eighteen as a single provider, I have tried to remain true to my ideals and principles and faithful to what I believed be the best interests of my patients. I am very proud of what I have been able to accomplish here with the help of a core talented colleagues and dedicated and fiercely loyal staff both past and present. I have tried hard through those years to make SJMH/MMCNI/MercyOne a better, safer and more sophisticated medical and, now, an educational institution. I will be forever grateful to the patients, families and people of North Iowa and Southern Minnesota who have placed their trust in me for nearly three decades. It has been a privilege to serve them. I am excited to see what life has in store for me and my family next."

Darin Waters, Ph.D. knocked it out of the park last night at The Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County Black History event. His wide-ranging discourse on the United States' historical memory of itself touched on Thomas Jefferson, Alexis de Tocqueville, Abraham Lincoln, Dred Scott, and W.E.B. DuBois. As a UNC Asheville history professor, as well as the university's director of community engagement, Darin is one of our region's intellectual guiding lights. We're honored to call him a friend and colleague!
