Building Confidence in COVID-19 Vaccines | CDC

Vaccine confidence is the collective trust that patients and their families have in: recommended vaccines, the providers that administer them, and the development and authorization processes. Please consider reading about the vaccine on the CDC's website linked below to better educate yourself and those you care about on the available COVID-19 vaccines. Vaccine confidence within communities will lead to more people getting vaccinated, which will lead to fewer COVID-19 illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths. https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/vaccinate-with-confidence.html

Thanks to a group of anonymous alumni, a challenge has been issued to Bear Nation for today: 400 donors for our 4th annual #BearsHaveHeart in just 24 hours. The stakes? $250,000 in unlocking challenges as we close in on our goal throughout the day! Let’s Go, Bears!

03.23.21 | LR's fourth annual #BearsHaveHeart Giving Day!

We know the past year has been difficult for many families. We appreciate any gift now more than ever. If giving financially is not an option, we encourage you to have “heart” through other strategies such as mentoring an undergraduate student, facilitating a Graduate Hour session, or simply telling someone else about your experience at LR!

Each gift, no matter the size, helps us take one more step toward meeting our goal and claiming the transformational challenge gifts. If you are active on social media, please use your platforms to talk about this day and to encourage others to join you in giving back! Use our hashtags #BearsHaveHeart and #IGive2LRU, and tag Lenoir-Rhyne in your posts.

Thanks for the shoutout, Bounty & Soul! It's always great to see LR students and alumni in action. Keep up the good work during National Nutrition Month, LRU Asheville Dietetic Intern Emily Sepic. Thank you for supporting the efforts towards reducing food insecurity in the WNC area, LRU Asheville Dietetic Internship Alumnus and Bounty & Soul's Programs Coordinator, Abbie Young 😀

It's week 2️⃣ of March's #NationalNutritionMonth 🎉 and this week's theme is centered around Meal Planning 🍽️🗓️ Meal planning/meal prepping is a way to stay organized and plan for what meals you’ll have in the week ahead 🥙🍲🌮🍜Making meal planning a part of your weekly routine can help save time ⌚and money💲 and relieve some of the stress or burden of cooking during the busy week!

Meal planning and preparation doesn’t have to be all or nothing, it can be as involved or as simple as you’d like 🌠 Meal prep can range from having produce washed and cut 🔪🍠🥬 and ready to cook or can mean having meals completely made and ready to eat 🍝🥗 or a range in between. Figure out what extent of meal planning works for you and your lifestyle.

Here are a few of our favorite Meal Prep tips:

🗓️ It may seem daunting or may not be practical for everyone to plan out every single meal. Start small by planning a few meals or snacks for the week ahead. Figure out what works well for you and build upon your planning as you feel comfortable or are able to.

🛒 Shop your pantry first. See what you have already at home before hitting the grocery store.

🥕🥒 Prep raw veggies for snacks & lunches. Cut carrots, celery & bell peppers and stick in a mason jar for easy access!

🍪🍌🥤 Prepare 1-2 grab & go breakfast options: over night oats, oat “cookies, pre-made frozen fruit smoothies, cut apples w/ peanut butter (squeeze lemon or lime juice over apples to keep them from browning)

🌾 Prep a batch of quinoa, lentils, brown rice, or pasta to have for the week to bulk up various dishes.

🥗 Make a mason jar salad! (dressing on bottom, salad greens in middle, optional toppings on top!

🍲 Batch cook a soup or chili! (You can add in veggies such as greens or the whole grains you batch cooked.

💦 Moisture is the enemy of meal prepping! Ensure your food is dried or cooled properly before storing (or will rot quicker)

🧅🧄 Do not pre-prep onions and garlic, they can turn toxic if they are prepped too far in advance. They are good, however, to chop about 15 minutes in advance before cooking over heat to enhance medicinal properties.

Thank you to our content contributors, Lenoir-Rhyne University Asheville Dietetic Intern Emily Sepic, professional chef Ali Conry and our very own Programs Coordinator Abbie Young.

What a bright spot in my day and an encouragement from my school and classmates! Thank you to all the professors who helped us transition from in-person to online classes! I hope we’re back in the Fall.
Prospective students and those who have applied or already been accepted, you are invited to attend our Pints & Pretzels Open House tomorrow, Wednesday June 12th, at 5:30pm. Then stay for the film, "Living the Change" that starts at 6:30pm.
Come to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville for 7 days of story-listening & story-telling along with coaching, community & supportive exploration. This 14th annual workshop welcomes all levels of expertise, from beginner to experienced teller. Participants discover ways of being in the world that nurture your creative flow while developing skills to: • Find, create, learn, and polish stories • Effectively integrate voice with image, gesture, and emotion • Embody a story and break free of memorization • Engage in companion listening and learn to give self and partner appreciations • Activate your body as a key component of a well-told tale • Use your voice, breath, and silence to support the audience’s listening journey Learn more at StoryWindow.com, email [email protected] or call 828-258-1113. https://www.facebook.com/events/648587305562839/
Connie is booking for the 2019-2020 school year now and would love to bring stories to her hometown schools here in Asheville and the surrounding communities. Contact [email protected] and ask about special discounts for local performances. For elementary students, Connie tells participatory, high-energy Appalachian and traditional world tales as well as stories from the best of children's literature, often accompanied by musical sound effects and props. For Middle and Senior High Schools, her repertoire includes humorous mountain tales, hair-raising chillers, dramatic true-life adventures along with captivating folktales: all for older imaginations and young adults. She is also available for teacher & parent workshops. https://storywindow.com/performances/schools-libraries/
I am seeing this photo of the famed storytelling family, Ray Hicks for the first time! It is Rosa and Ray with Ray's Mom, Rena sitting on her bed which was in the front room of their Beech Mountain home. Rosa is holding Dorthy Jean and Ray has Leonard in his lap. And there is the specially made RCA battery operated recording machine - wow! This photo could have been taken by Frank or Ann Warner in the late 1940's - they who recorded Ray and his family on and off for a number of years . Thanks to Edd Nettie Presnell for posting it - and Jack Wright for leading me to it!
Thanks to Laura Hope-Gill for this grand endorsement! Here's what she said about my upcoming 6 weekly story-work sessions at Lenoir-Rhyne University Asheville. Come join us! Do you have a storyteller in your circle of closest friends and family? Here is a fantastic gift for them: a workshop with Connie Regan-Blake. This six-week course allows time for stories to develop, for each participant to reflect and explore between sessions. I did this last Spring, and I've been telling stories every since using what I learned. There's more to telling a good tale than simply having one to tell. Connie generously shares her wisdom and serious skills--from knowing what kind of cough drop to use to knowing how to stop thinking your words aren't magic.
This winter take the opportunity to nurture new stories to grow in 6 weekly sessions with Connie at Lenoir-Rhyne University Asheville.
For my Asheville/Black Mountain buddies - hope to see you at this performance next Saturday evening. And I am delighted that Donna Marie Todd will also take the stage and share one of her 'not to be missed' true stories!
Asheville area, here's an update on some upcoming local events! If you don't live in the area, please share with your friends who do.
