Best COVID-19 Map and What is a Pandemic????

In this conversation about coronavirus, Dr. Melissa Booth (LRU Adjunct Professor in communicating science) tells Andrew Polich (Sustainability Studies graduate student) about the most useful map she’s found. This Johns Hopkins map shows infections to the COUNTY level in the US as well as global data and critical trends. She also explains what it means for a virus to jump from ‘epidemic’ to ‘pandemic’. Thanks you two!

Hi Bears,
April is Occupational Therapy Month! You may be wondering what an occupational therapist does, and how occupational therapy differs from physical therapy.

According to the American Occupational Therapy Association, "As an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant, you are part of a vitally important profession that helps people across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities. Your holistic and customized approach to evaluations, interventions, and outcomes help a child with disabilities participate in school and in social situations, assist a person recovering from injuries to regain skills, aid an older adult to stay as independent as possible, and offer the specialized support and services to people of all ages and in all circumstances that only occupational therapy can provide." https://www.aota.org/

We thank all OTs for what they do to serve others.

If you're interested in becoming an occupational therapist yourself, please check out our fully accredited OT program.

To Prospective Graduate Students: A Note About Standardized Testing

During this challenging time, we are aware that many prospective graduate students are unable to access standardized testing. In response, we may be able to waive this requirement for summer and fall 2020 admission. Please do not let the inability to access a standardized test deter your admission process. In lieu of test scores, additional references and/or an interview may be requested.

This 14th annual workshop welcomes all levels of expertise, from beginner to experienced teller. Participants discover ways of being in the world that nurture your creative flow while developing skills to: • Find, create, learn, and polish stories • Effectively integrate voice with image, gesture, and emotion • Embody a story and break free of memorization • Engage in companion listening and learn to give self and partner appreciations • Activate your body as a key component of a well-told tale • Use your voice, breath, and silence to support the audience’s listening journey Learn more at StoryWindow.com, email [email protected] or call 828-258-1113. https://www.facebook.com/events/648587305562839/
Connie is booking for the 2019-2020 school year now and would love to bring stories to her hometown schools here in Asheville and the surrounding communities. Contact [email protected] and ask about special discounts for local performances. For elementary students, Connie tells participatory, high-energy Appalachian and traditional world tales as well as stories from the best of children's literature, often accompanied by musical sound effects and props. For Middle and Senior High Schools, her repertoire includes humorous mountain tales, hair-raising chillers, dramatic true-life adventures along with captivating folktales: all for older imaginations and young adults. She is also available for teacher & parent workshops. https://storywindow.com/performances/schools-libraries/
I am seeing this photo of the famed storytelling family, Ray Hicks for the first time! It is Rosa and Ray with Ray's Mom, Rena sitting on her bed which was in the front room of their Beech Mountain home. Rosa is holding Dorthy Jean and Ray has Leonard in his lap. And there is the specially made RCA battery operated recording machine - wow! This photo could have been taken by Frank or Ann Warner in the late 1940's - they who recorded Ray and his family on and off for a number of years . Thanks to Edd Nettie Presnell for posting it - and Jack Wright for leading me to it!
Thanks to Laura Hope-Gill for this grand endorsement! Here's what she said about my upcoming 6 weekly story-work sessions at Lenoir-Rhyne University Asheville. Come join us! Do you have a storyteller in your circle of closest friends and family? Here is a fantastic gift for them: a workshop with Connie Regan-Blake. This six-week course allows time for stories to develop, for each participant to reflect and explore between sessions. I did this last Spring, and I've been telling stories every since using what I learned. There's more to telling a good tale than simply having one to tell. Connie generously shares her wisdom and serious skills--from knowing what kind of cough drop to use to knowing how to stop thinking your words aren't magic.
This winter take the opportunity to nurture new stories to grow in 6 weekly sessions with Connie at Lenoir-Rhyne University Asheville.
For my Asheville/Black Mountain buddies - hope to see you at this performance next Saturday evening. And I am delighted that Donna Marie Todd will also take the stage and share one of her 'not to be missed' true stories!
Asheville area, here's an update on some upcoming local events! If you don't live in the area, please share with your friends who do.
Here's my latest 'short and sweet' newsletter. enjoy - and please sign up if you'd like them delivered occasionally right to your inbox!
Need an instant hit of scary, spine-tingling stories for Halloween?
Can't make it to TN for The National Storytelling Festival? You can still give a listen to some stories. On Friday, October 5, performers will be live-streamed from the Library Tent. Join in the listening from wherever you happen to be! I am looking forward to debuting several new stories during the weekend - so if you're coming please hunt me up!
Exciting news! I am releasing a brand new CD. It is my first live recording in a while and I am thrilled! You can pre-order it now and receive a gift! Plus each CD includes a digital download card. "Leap and Laugh! Tales of Adventure" is a live performance of some of my favorite true life stories along with an intriguing traditional Scottish tale. There are guffaws and downright out-loud laughing all the way through. Treat yourself, or if you know anyone with a birthday coming up it makes a great gift! Pre-Order Online Here: https://storywindow.com/store/#leap If you pre-order before September 30, 2018 you will also receive a FREE CD - “Stories for the Road & To Grow On” featuring the tandem tales of The Folktellers with no extra shipping! Expect to receive both of them in mid October.
