“Daniel Worth was a Quaker from Guilford County, N.C., who migrated to Indiana, came back to North Carolina as an abolitionist Wesleyan Methodist missionary in 1857, and was forced to leave the state in 1860 after considerable trouble in connection with his antislavery activity. — As fugitive slaves made their way north, sixty-two-year-old Daniel Worth was heading south to replace expelled Wesleyan Methodist ministers. Arrested in December 1859, he spent the winter in an unheated cell, causing permanent disability. Worth became a hero in abolitionist circles and a celebrated speaker in some of the nation's largest churches.” https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Worth-659

We are excited to announce Kelly Policelli as the new State Archivist of North Carolina.

As State Archivist, Policelli will guide the State Archives of North Carolina in its mission to collect, preserve, and provide public access to historically significant archival materials relating to the state.

“I am so excited to be leading the State Archives at such a pivotal moment,” said Policelli. “The information landscape has been upended by digital technologies and, now, powerful AI tools that will change the way we work. And yet, as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the value of our archives and the stories they tell has rarely been more clear. I'm looking forward to working with my new colleagues in the division and the larger department to safeguard not just our physical collections but our digital history for future generations of North Carolinians. This great state has so many stories yet to tell.”

Policelli brings years of experience to the role, most recently serving as assistant librarian and coordinator of University Archives and Special Collections at Elon University.

in 1816 a Heavy Frost covered N.C. & The South-‘The Year W/O a Summer’ was caused by the Eruption of Indonesia’s Mt.Tambora in April of 1815. Volcanic dust caused drought, low temps, and other strange & devastating weather around the world for months. https://www.dncr.nc.gov/blog/2016/08/22/north-carolinas-year-without-summer-1816?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAYnJpZBExV1NYeTdQZDZhejM0UnBqNAEeCGytRgo0tpUilza0eGFxDOqxJ-SPXxQ0fc0iFhpJuVUOFMHRCTC88iTv3fU_aem_x5tg51irg5eEai6lzPsSlg
