UNC Asheville's Mass Communication department emphasizes a liberal arts approach to the study of mass communication disciplines, clear and effective communication, and information literacy, to ensure success in the profession and a firm foundation for lifelong learning.

Mission: We give students a humanities-grounded education in both the theory and practice of mass communication, preparing students for further study or life in the workplace. We emphasize learning and discovery through exemplary teaching, innovative scholarship, creative expression, co-curricular activities, undergraduate research, engaged service and practical experience. UNC Asheville's Mass Communication department is distinctive in its emphasis on a broad liberal-arts approach. Our approach to education in Mass Communication emphasizes life skills including critical thinking, clear and thoughtful expression, and honest open inquiry, while developing an understanding of the connection between mass communication and the liberal arts and between other disciplines on campus. We encourage students to understand the dimensions of human diversity and respect the values of others, while clarifying their own values. As a department, we seek to address the needs of the community through usable research, and through outreach via a continuum of learning and creative and engaged service. And, as a department, we seek to engage in social, economic and environmentally sustainable practices.

Online classes and social distancing meant reinventing MCOM 495 Media Production. Today, we bring you Ong Yang's senior project.

"I’ve always wanted to showcase my culture especially because my ethnicity, Hmong, is not very well known even though there is a large population of us in the US. We also seldom have the chance to wear our traditional clothing so I enjoy taking them out whenever I have the chance. (We only get to wear them for Hmong New Year during November around Thanksgiving and for when we get married.)
I filmed my two younger cousins with my Samsung phone and a handheld gimbo."

"The students make UNC Asheville special. I've taught at large state schools in the past, and the experience is different. Here, because we're smaller, we get to know the students, we engage more directly with them and their work, and we become a community. It sounds a little, maybe a lot, sentimental, but it's true. This place is just special."
