CommunityLab Partners with UNC Asheville to Offer Surveillance Testing for Students - News And Events | UNC Asheville

Since early February 2021 UNC Asheville has partnered with local laboratory CommunityLab to offer a COVID-19 surveillance testing program for students each Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. by appointment only at the Highsmith Student Union on campus. Surveillance testing refers to regular testing for individuals who may not be experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms and is an added safeguard to minimizing the spread of COVID-19. Testing performed is the gold-standard PCR testing for COVID-19 via nasopharyngeal swab collection and results are available within 24 hours from the Arden-based lab.

More than a dozen student leaders in Kindergarten through 7th grade are involved in a new partnership model designed to create a learning environment that brings out the “royalty, genius, and uniqueness of each student, centering the humanity, gifts, and dignity of each individual and culture.” That’s according to the creators of the model – a team of educators/activists, who have formed a partnership with funding from $40,000 grant to UNC Asheville from the Dogwood Health Trust and $17,600 contract with Dogwood Trust for REGAL (Relevant Education Grows All Learners) authors and community leaders.

Professor of Classics Sophie Mills on the UNCA Q***r Studies Conference, how it has changed over the years, and its effect on the courses and students she teaches.

UNC Asheville’s biennial Q***r Studies Conference, co-sponsored this year by Davidson College, will bring together scholars, artists and activists March 26-28 for virtual workshops and presentations. With keynote presentations by Wriply Bennet and Kay Ulanday Barrett, the conference will be based around the theme, Fitting In and Sticking Out – Q***r [In]Visibilities and the Perils of Inclusion.

On March 11, 2020, Chancellor Cable sent an email to campus announcing that due to concerns over the novel coronavirus, Spring Break would be extended a week, and once it ended classes would resume online. A week later, faculty and staff who were able to were encouraged to start working from home. At the time, we thought we might return to campus as normal in a few weeks. That didn't happen.
