UNC Asheville is expanding its work to support the health and well-being of communities across North Carolina. 💙

The NC Center for Health and Wellness at UNC Asheville (NCCHW) has received a $1.2 million, three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Community Living (ACL) to expand programs supporting older adults and adults with disabilities.

“NCCHW is very excited to receive this grant award that will build on our collaborative statewide partnerships and successes to improve systems of care and make a significant impact on the health and well-being of older adults in North Carolina,” said NCCHW CDSME Project Director Vivian Gettys, M.P.H., M.A., R.N.

The project will connect more people with evidence-based wellness programs, behavioral health resources and community support.

The wait is over! 🎉 Work has officially begun on the campus gateways project, bringing new monument signage to our campus entrances on W.T. Weaver Boulevard, plus updates at the roundabout.

This plan has been in the works since before Helene, and thanks to approved state funding, we finally get to see the beautification efforts we've been working on since 2023 become a reality.

Big news from our Biology Department! A study out today in the Journal of Bacteriology, published by the American Society for Microbiology, points to a new "Achilles' heel" in drug-resistant Staph. It was led by Professor Melinda Grosser and 2026 grad Jenna Vidaud, with 12 UNC Asheville undergrad co-authors. 🦠

Disabling one enzyme knocked out much of the bacteria's power to cause serious infection, without pushing it toward resistance. 👏
