A New Frontier for UNC Asheville - Stories from UNC Asheville

“It is critical for instructors to acknowledge differences in levels of resources and to accommodate these differences as best as possible. It's easy to say that someone should have Internet access and a laptop if they want to be a college student; however, our society is inequitable at its core, and it is our responsibility to do the work to support all of our students in accessing our courses.” - Evelyn Chiang, Associate Professor of Psychology at UNC Asheville.

Summer 2020 ushered in UNC Asheville’s first all online semester as the University sought ways to safely conduct classes in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. For many UNC Asheville faculty, online classes were a new experience—one that presented new challenges, but also unexpected joys and rewa...

Exploring the Swannanoa Gap

COVER STORY: "Near my home in Ridgecrest is a beautiful place that’s rich in history and serves as a primary point of entry into Western North Carolina: the Swannanoa Gap." - Historian and UNC Asheville professor Daniel Pierce via Mountain Xpress

The route through the Swannanoa Gap — where present-day Old U.S. 70 and Mill Creek Road intersect — was first carved out by Archaic Indians as they came up out of the Appalachian foothills and followed Swannanoa Creek on the way to hunting and gathering opportunities in the mountains. Later, Bun...

NASCAR’s Confederate Flag Ban Faces a Test in Alabama

“I think it was the historical moment, and they felt like they needed to do something, and here was something that really wasn’t going to cost them, especially in an era when you’ve got at most 5,000 fans at a race,” said Daniel S. Pierce, a professor at UNC Asheville and the author of “Real NASCAR : White Lightning, Red Clay and Big Bill France.” Story by The New York Times.

Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway will come after a black, Alabama-born driver took on a stubborn ritual of racing and Southern culture.

UNC Asheville’s Prison Education Program Forges Ahead through COVID-19 - Stories from UNC Asheville

“One thing I was struck by was how, by 8 p.m. and after three hours of class, there was almost always plenty of steam left in the room to keep talking,” said Will Revere, assistant professor of English, who led the Humanities 214 class. “I felt energized after class rather than beat.”

The worldwide COVID-19 outbreak sent UNC Asheville classes into an online format in the spring of 2020; professors held lectures over Zoom, connected with students via email, and directed discussions on Moodle message boards. But for faculty teaching in UNC Asheville’s Prison Education Program at ...

At the YMCA of Western North Carolina we celebrate Pride today and every day. We celebrate and stand in solidarity with our LGBTQ+, Black, and Brown communities. We are honored to support the LGBTQ Oral History Archive Project in collaboration with the Blue Ridge Pride Center and UNC Asheville. The project aims to document a richer, fuller, more inclusive history of our region by recording the stories and memories of individuals who have spent much of their lives in the South. We hope, too, that these interviews will contribute to a large-scale needs assessment and asset mapping for LGBTQ communities in our area.
