Three of our School of Nursing faculty spent Saturday evening at the Amberwell Health Foundation Gala at the Atchison Event Center. Dr. Jackie Harris, Dr. Violet Gomes, and Dr. Sarah Gillies represented BCSON at a night of giving benefiting the Building Hope campaign at Amberwell Atchison, which will bring cancer care, expanded rehabilitation, and additional specialty services to patients right here at home.

Thank you to the Amberwell Health Foundation for a beautiful evening and for investing in Atchison’s future 💫.

Dr. Harris and our senior nursing students spent three days at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital last week for an immersive clinical experience. Students learned from Madonna’s on-site educators, observed leading-edge rehabilitation practices, and saw firsthand the work of restoring independence to patients. Thank you to the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals team for welcoming our students so generously! 🌟

Welcome to the Profession! 🩺

On Wednesday, August 26, the Benedictine College Student Nurses’ Association hosted its Welcome to the Profession event, officially welcoming our incoming junior nursing class into the nursing profession. The afternoon marked a celebration of the beginning of our juniors’ nursing journey. Students came in their nursing scrubs for the official junior class photo with Rocky the Raven, and there was a special giveaway just for them. Our seniors joined in as well for the introduction of this year’s Big/Little mentorship pairs, kicking off relationships that will carry through the school year. Snacks, refreshments, and plenty of photos with Rocky rounded out the event ✨.

We always enjoy a visit from Rocky to start off the new academic year. Thank you to BCSNA for putting together such a wonderful welcome, and congratulations to our newest members of the nursing profession 👏.

Be on the lookout for more photos 📸 from the event coming soon! Go Ravens! ❤️

🌟 Congratulations to Dr. Grove and Dr. Gillies on their new publication in the Nurse Educator journal, published by Wolters Kluwer! 🌟

Their article, “Closing the Communication Gap Through Text-Based Clinical Simulation: Right Provider, Right Message,” examines how text-based simulation can strengthen the way nursing students communicate with providers. The communication simulator at the center of this work (SimPhone Pro) was designed and developed by Dr. Grove. Built on the ISBARR framework, it gives students repeated, realistic practice in reaching the right provider with the right message, before they ever step to a patient’s bedside.

This past spring, Dr. Gillies implemented the simulator in her Senior Immersive Simulation Day. The pilot went well, and the qualitative feedback our seniors shared was positive. Students described the scenarios as realistic to what they encountered in their clinicals across the program, which is exactly what we want from simulation. We look forward to continuing this work as the simulator expands into more courses and more of our students get the chance to practice, practice, practice.

We’re proud of the scholarship coming out of our faculty and the impact it’s having on nursing education nationally.

Several Benedictine College nursing faculty members attended the Kansas Nurse Educator Conference this week at Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. We are especially proud to celebrate 🎉 Drs. Gillies and Callahan, who presented poster sessions highlighting their doctoral work on educating nursing students to provide compassionate, dignified end-of-life care.

This important work reflects both excellence in nursing education and our commitment to caring for the whole person 🌟.

At Benedictine College, we are blessed with faculty who are dedicated not only to advancing their profession through scholarship, but also to forming nurses who serve others with knowledge, compassion, and respect for the dignity of every human life.

Congratulations, Drs. Gillies and Callahan! Thank you for representing our mission so well and for making a meaningful impact on the future of nursing education. 🩺

🌟 Annual Faculty Retreat at Conception Abbey! 🌟

Last week, our nursing faculty stepped away from campus for a retreat at Conception Abbey. A few days of reflection, renewal, and planning for the year ahead. Decked out in our new “Forward, Always Forward” Benedictine College tees, we spent time surrounded by the beauty and peace of the Abbey, from the stunning statue of Jesus the Good Shepherd to a bronze of Pope Saint John Paul II and framed calligraphy of the Rule of St. Benedict reminding us “that in all things God may be glorified.” The truth is, the work of nursing education is never finished! And that’s exactly how we like it. Every syllabus refined, every simulation design, every hour of planning comes back to one thing: our students are always our top priority. We left refreshed, refocused, and ready to keep moving forward, always forward, for the next generation of nurses 🩺.

📚🇺🇸 BCSON Faculty at the new Moritz Library! 🇺🇸📚

Our nursing faculty had the chance to tour Benedictine’s brand-new library yesterday. That’s a full-size replica of the Liberty Bell behind them, cast with the famous “Pass and Stow, Philada, MDCCLIII” inscription (crack and all!). Want to see it for yourself? The library preview is part of the Spirit of America celebration this Saturday, July 4, from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. Free and open to the public! 💫

The morning features an exhibition of rare historical documents (including a first edition of the U.S. Constitution! One of only five known copies 🤯), costumed re-enactors with remarks from “Thomas Jefferson,” “George Washington,” and “Abraham Lincoln,” and children’s games.

Bonus: the first 500 attendees receive a 3D replica of the Moritz Library, plus a free pocket Constitution and souvenir Betsy Ross flag.

☕ Holy Grounds coffee shop opens at 8:30 a.m., and the Raven Store will be open too! Grab a cup, pick up some Benedictine gear, and come explore! We look forward to seeing you there!!

✨ What a beautiful day to celebrate our Benedictine College School of Nursing Class of 2026 as they transition from the classroom to the bedside 🩺.

The afternoon began with our traditional Nursing Pinning Ceremony at 1:00 p.m. in O’Malley-McAllister Auditorium and concluded with Baccalaureate Mass this evening, a day grounded in faith, service, and the call to care for others. 🙏

The Pinning Ceremony is one of nursing’s most cherished traditions, originating in the 1860s at the Nightingale School of Nursing in London. It welcomes new graduates into the profession through the blessing of hands ✋ and the presentation of the Benedictine College Nursing Pin, a symbol they will carry throughout their careers as a reminder of who they serve and why.

To our Class of 2026: we are so proud of you. You have earned this moment through long clinical hours, late-night study sessions ☕, simulation labs, and the quiet acts of compassion that already mark you as nurses. As you step into practice, may your hands be steady, your hearts be open, and your work always be a ministry to those entrusted to your care. 💕

Congratulations, Ravens! 🐦‍⬛ The profession is better because you are in it. 🕊️

Now on to graduation! 🎓 See you at Commencement, 10:00 a.m. tomorrow! 🎉

📸 Family and friends, if you were with us at the Pinning, please drop some pictures in the comments! We would love to see them and celebrate alongside you!
