Ohio University Voice Division

We are SO excited for our students Max Swartout and Kaylee Michael. Please share!

Support OHIO Students in Online Voice Competition

The American Pops Orchestra (APO), founded and directed by OHIO alum Luke Frazier, is thrilled to announce that two OHIO School of Music students will compete in the third annual vocal competition “NextGen: The Voices of Tomorrow.” Max Swartout and Kaylee Michael were selected to join 28 other semi-finalists in Washington DC in March, but the on-site competition needed to be postponed due to COVID-19. APO is known for its creative and out-of-the-box programming so it’s no surprise that they transformed the event into a virtual competition.

On Friday, April 24th and Saturday, April 25th, 30 semi-finalists from university programs will virtually compete to win the top title. Votes from a panel of judges and the virtual audience will determine the best voice of tomorrow. Anyone can register on-line to receive a link to the livestream competition. The program will be streamed online, with the semi-finals and finals both beginning at 8 p.m. on their respective evenings. Winners will be announced LIVE on April 26th at 8:00 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded, and the first-place winner will be featured in an upcoming APO show in the 2020-2021 season.

Consider joining the event and supporting OHIO students Max and Kaylee. Registration is free, but a donation to support the cost of the event and prize money for the winners is appreciated.

Participating Colleges and Universities include American University, The Catholic University of America, Frostburg State University, George Mason University, Howard University, James Madison University, Liberty University, Marshall University, University of Mary Washington, Ohio University, Temple University, West Virginia University, and the College of William and Mary.

Ohio University piano technician, Chris Purdy recently completed the Yamaha Performance Piano Service Seminar at the Yamaha America headquarters in Buena Park, California. This involved an intensive week of study with Yamaha grand piano preparation and the application of advanced techniques in grand piano regulation, tuning, and voicing. All participants were assigned individual Yamaha grand pianos to practice and apply these skills according to strict manufacturers specifications. Much gratitude to Thomas Solich of Solich Piano and Music Company of Columbus, OH for sponsoring Mr. Purdy’s admission to the program and expenses!
