UGA Jere W. Morehead Honors College The Jere W. Morehead Honors College at UGA provides an Honors education through smaller courses taught by UGA’s best professors.

Morehead Honors College at the University of Georgia enriches undergraduate experiences in and beyond the classroom through research, internship and travel-study opportunities. We also offer a wide range of opportunities for learning and growth that extend far beyond the classroom. These opportunities include a variety of programs that connect great students with great faculty, such as our book discussions, held in faculty members’ homes, and our lunchbox lectures, giving students the opportunity to learn about the latest work being done by faculty members. The Morehead Honors College's Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities, better known as CURO, makes it possible for all UGA students to conduct undergraduate research alongside faculty mentors. UGA Honors students regularly go not only beyond the classroom, but also beyond campus and to the far reaches of the state and the world.

Adunni Noibi and Pablo Ashi, right, co-executive directors of the Arch Policy Institute, met for lunch and planning recently with Shannon Brooks, left, director of the Office of Service-Learning, and Dean Meg Amstutz. API focuses on bringing together students from all majors to examine policy issues across a number of areas. Supported by the Honors College, API is a student-run, non-partisan public policy think tank. We're excited to see what the year holds for API and everyone involved!

Our next Honors Ambassador Highlight goes to Rhea Shah!

Rhea is a second-year from Duluth, Georgia, majoring in marketing. She believes Honors Ambassadors are important because they "help put a friendly face to the program," and that "we get to share our own experiences, connect with prospective and current students, and help them see what being part of Honors is really like."

Beyond her role as an Honors Ambassador, Rhea is involved with the Honors Student Council and conducts marketing strategy research under Professor Bendle. She also serves as director of external relations for AMA, virtual engagement co-chair for Terry Edge, and an ambassador for Experience UGA.

Her favorite "hidden gem" on campus is the pharmacy building, where she likes to study.

Our next HISP Highlight goes to Sana Chitalwala!

This summer, Sana traveled to Peru through the Medical Spanish Study Abroad Program, taking courses in medical Spanish and internship in Spanish while observing physicians in local hospitals. During her clinical rotations, she watched physicians with limited resources give excellent hands-on patient care, learning firsthand that quality healthcare is not defined solely by the equipment available, but by the dedication and compassion of the physicians providing it. The Honors International Scholars Program helped fund her trip.

"This program had a huge impact on both my education and my future goals. Professionally, it confirmed my desire to pursue a career in medicine and gave me a clearer understanding of the qualities that make an excellent physician," Sana said. "In the future, I hope to build strong relationships with my patients, prioritize communication and patient education, and strive to be adaptable and understanding."

Say hello to HTA Nicole Nicolescu!

Nicole is a fourth-year from Marietta pursuing a degree in biomedical physiology.

When asked about her opinion on the role of Honors teaching assistants, Nicole expressed their main responsibility is to help new Honors students navigate college and show them “what opportunities are at their fingertips if they just look for it.” She says, “UGA is an INCREDIBLE school, and we have resources they might never learn about otherwise.”

Beyond her position as an HTA, Nicole is a physiology peer learning assistant, a lead peer tutor, and a part of the Pre-Anesthesiologist Assistant Association.

Nicole’s fun fact: if she was an ice cream topping, she would be caramel syrup because she likes to cover her bases and help elevate the presentation of something!

Our next HISP Highlight goes to Benjamin Petroff!

This May, Benjamin traveled to Australia and New Zealand through the UGA Discover Abroad program, taking courses in "People, Planet, Profit" and international business that examined sustainable business practices firsthand. He came away with a new appreciation for how differently Australia and New Zealand approach sustainability compared to the U.S., from renewable energy policy to how local communities protect their coastlines.

"After seeing untouched New Zealand lands and the Great Barrier Reef, I have a better understanding of why reducing human impact is so important," Benjamin said. "Because of this program, I have decided to pursue a certificate in sustainability to learn more about helping the environment and being a force for good in the business world."

The Honors International Scholars Program (HISP) supports Honors students engaging in overseas opportunities by providing 80-100 scholarships a year with an average range of $2,500 to $4,500 per award. Our first Honors Ambassador Highlight goes to Natalya Huallanca!

Natalya is a third-year from Lawrenceville majoring in international affairs with a minor in political science. She believes that Honors Ambassadors “represent the values of Honors through leadership and involvement at UGA” and that they "help build connections and show students what makes being part of Honors so special.”

Beyond her role as an Honors Ambassador, Natalya is a PAL Mentor and on the Honors Student Council, both programs within the Honors College. She is also the Vice President of the Caribbean Student Association, a Frye Fellow, and a Dawg Camp Counselor.

Her favorite “hidden gem” in Athens is the Botanical Gardens, where she likes to study.

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting the Morehead Honors College Advisory Board for their fall meeting at Moore Hall. It was so wonderful to see everyone on campus!

Our board members able to attend included returning members Brooks Andrews, Jim Granade, Phillip Hight, Avery Monthero, Vijaya Palaniswamy, Kevin Patrick, Christy Szalwinski, and Susan Waltman and new members Virginia Adams, Brooke Bowen, Amanda Brouillette, Jay Roberts, and Colby Ruiz. We missed seeing Tricia Chastain, Andrew F. Littlejohn, Bret Schiller, Beth Shapiro, and Jennifer Sucre.

As a bonus, Susan was able to connect with a few of her Honors in New York interns, who worked with her at the Greater New York Hospital Association: Ava Godbey, Pablo Ashi, and Shriya Garg!

A big THANK YOU goes to all our board members for their service!

It was such a joy to welcome the Class of 2030 at our 2026 Honors Convocation ceremony and reception on Wednesday! Kicking off the year by celebrating such a driven group of new students is always a highlight of the semester. Thank you to everyone who made it happen, including our Honors Ambassadors, Honors Teaching Assistants, and the entire Honors staff.

A special thanks goes to Livana Lekas, who opened the ceremony with a piano prelude, and Avery Britt, who closed it out with a beautiful rendition of “Georgia on My Mind.” We’re also grateful to our student speakers — Caroline Scurlock, Kate Kudela, Will Jamieson, Gabrielle Dyer-Palmer, Courtlyn Myers, Marion Clark, Pablo Ashi, and Spencer Krone — whose talent and leadership set a wonderful example for our newest Honors students.

To all of our first-year students, welcome to Morehead Honors College!
