Goldwater Scholar researches way to inhibit the ability of infectious bacteria to cause disease

The real question, though, is “Who is this young scientist?”

The simple answer is a senior Honors Tutorial College (HTC) Biological Sciences major, but Sorensen is much more than that. She is a Goldwater Scholar researching the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (staph) and how it can cause a variety of different diseases in humans, with her overarching goal being to identify novel targets to inhibit the ability of staph to cause disease.

Hailee Sorensen is a senior HTC student and Goldwater Scholar researching the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (staph) and how it can cause a variety of different diseases in humans.

Hines Brings COVID-19 Drug Discovery to Online Environment for Innovative Learning - Ohio University | College of Arts & Sciences

Grateful for tutors like Dr. Jennifer Hines who quickly adapt lesson plans to turn real-world issues into teachable moments!

"The HTC tutorial students are using the Ohio Supercomputer Center to investigate the three-dimensional structure of an RNA element that is important for SARS-CoV-2 replication. Using molecular modeling software at the OSC, they will dock drug molecules to the RNA to see if any existing drugs may potentially disrupt the RNA’s function and possibly be a treatment that could be rapidly developed for COVID-19."

Before spring break, Chemistry & Biochemistry Professor Jennifer Hines told her Tier III Medicinal Chemistry & Drug Discovery class that they would be discussing Anti-Proliferative Agents including Anti-Viral Agents after spring break. In addition, in her tutorial with two Honors Tutorial College st...

Congrats to HTC Neuroscience senior Haley Appelmann and Biological Sciences junior Shruthi Kandalai for winning 1st and 2nd place at the undergraduate poster presentation competition at Neuroscience Research Day!

Kandalai’s research is with Dr. Corinne Nielsen and focuses on how pericytes, cells that are thought to be involved in regulating blood flow, are affected in their lab's mouse model of brain arteriovenous malformations, a rare vascular condition that often leads to brain hemorrhage and death in patients. Appelmann’s research with Dr. Peggy Zoccola is about how childhood adversity and cortisol habituation affects an adult’s response to stress.

“I was able to attend the first annual Neuroscience Day during my sophomore year, so it was exciting to go my senior year and see how the neuroscience community at OU is growing,” Appelmann said.

Keep up the great work, Haley and Shruthi!
