The Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service is a catalyst for regional, state and national collective impact in the areas of entrepreneurship, energy and the environment, and public and social engagement policy areas. Emma Cepek uses the data analysis skills she gained while earning her master of public administration (MPA) degree in her work with Ohio governments as a community planner. 🏛️

Cepek went into the program with a passion for helping communities solve problems. During her MPA, she served as a graduate assistant with the Planning, Education, Evaluation and Research team.

In her current role working for Verdantas LLC, she helps create comprehensive plans for future projects, drafts zoning code updates and implements economic development initiatives.

“The impact of this work can be seen in the plans, policies and projects that help communities grow and thrive. It's rewarding to know that the work we do helps local governments make decisions that are thoughtful, strategic and reflective of community needs.” 🤝

Congratulations to our own Dr. Natalie Kruse Daniels, professor and director of the environmental studies program, for being named a September Faculty Newsmaker! 👏

Dr. Kruse Daniels was featured in the Ohio Newsroom and several other outlets discussing the increasing threat of flash flooding across the state and Central Appalachia.

John Born, '85, '92, came to OHIO to play baseball and earn a degree in journalism. The latter proved to be a turning point in his law enforcement career that led to a post in the State of Ohio cabinet. 🗞️ ⚾️

He also earned a Master of Social Science degree, a choice that helped him work his way up. His 33-year career with the state came to a close after six years as director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety.

Born has since returned to OHIO as an Executive in Residence serving the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and the Voinovich School, teaching classes and helping lead the development of virtual reality training programs as part of the OHIO360 team. 🐾

Congratulations to the Honorable Yvette McGee Brown, BSJ ’82, for being named the 2026 OHIO Alumna of the Year! 💚

McGee Brown's four decades in law and public service have reshaped how Ohio protects its children and pursues equal justice for all residents. In 2011, she was appointed the first African American woman to serve on the Supreme Court of Ohio.

She also has routinely given back with her time at OHIO, from serving on advisory boards, giving guest lectures to hosting leadership sessions and more.

“Yvette McGee Brown has been an inspiring and trailblazing leader throughout her career. As a long-term public servant, I've always admired her exemplary achievements and willingness to provide me and others with constructive, candid feedback. We at the Voinovich School are grateful for her longstanding connection and insights, particularly for the terms that she served on our School’s Advisory Board.” — Tracy Plouck, Dean
