This is a 3 year term beginning in 2021. Dr. Choi will be involved in the SSWR conference abstract acceptance decision-making process.

The Society for Social Work and Research is a professional organization that supports social workers, social welfare professionals, students, faculty and researchers in related fields. The 2021 SSWR 25th Annual Conference Anniversary Celebration will be held in San Francisco, CA.

Today we celebrate Cheryl Averett Johnson BSW’89 (left) and Laura Jalbert BSW’99 MSW’00 (right) as the James "Jim" Dodd Distinguished Alumni Award honorees. This prestigious award was established in memory of UGA School of Social Work alumnus and Board of Visitors founder James "Jim" Dodd and is given annually to alumni who demonstrate the core values of the School of Social Work.

Ms. Johnson is the President and CEO of West Central Georgia Cancer Coalition (WCGCC) in Columbus, GA. WCGCC’s mission is to help reduce the burden of cancer in the communities they serve by providing outreach, education, advocacy, screenings and navigation for cancer services. In response to COVID-19, WCGCC with Coronavirus Emergency Funds is supporting active patients and their households affected by the pandemic with mortgage/rent or utilities assistance.

Ms. Jalbert is Owner and Clinical Director of Mindful Transitions in Marietta, GA. Responding to COVID-19, Laura is pivoting her team and resources to provide psychotherapy services to older adults in Assisted Living utilizing an online platform with those who can access the technology. Laura and her team are also actively lobbying professional groups and legislators to allow increased opportunities to better serve those with no access to technology at all.

As we continue to celebrate Honors week, today the School of Social Work is spotlighting 2 of our amazing BSW students, Emma Clarke (left) and Sara Panico (right).

Emma has received the Presidential Award for Excellence, a distinction given to less than 1% of the graduating class from each college and school. When asked about her academic experience Emma stated “The BSW program was a great choice, as I have been able to take many different courses, participate in the field education program, and meet so many amazing peers and teachers.” Congratulations Emma!

Sara has earned the highest academic distinction at UGA, as a First Honor Graduate. When asked why she chose the BSW program Sara stated “I chose the BSW program at UGA because I knew in my heart social work was the perfect career path for me. I knew I wanted to help others and social work offers a wide variety of avenues to do so.” Congratulations Sara!

The School of Social Work would like to recognize Griffin McNamara BA'18 honored as one of UGA Career Center's prestigious top 100 Student Employees of the Year. Griffin works with Ms. Kat Farlowe, Administrative Specialist and Assistant Graduate Coordinator for the PhD and MA NML programs. Ms. Farlowe wrote in the nomination letter that "Griffin shows professional respect where it is due, is prompt and reliable, and a true asset to our office." Currently, Griffin is completing a graduate program in advertising and public relations. After graduation this December he plans to work for an advertising agency. Congratulations Griffin!
