Hamilton Holmes Jr. draws from MLK’s ‘timeless truth’ in UGA keynote

“Because timeless truth is what made (King’s ‘I Have a Dream’) speech great, it is still relevant to today’s challenges.”

The legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. is its most valuable when the nation and our communities seem to be divided.

That was the message delivered by Terry College of Business alumnus Hamilton Holmes Jr. (BBA ’90) as he delivered the keynote address at the 18th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Breakfast on Jan. 15.

Holmes’ father was one of the first Black students to desegregate the University of Georgia in 1961, along with Charlayne Hunter-Gault, paving the way for Holmes Jr. to earn his bachelor’s degree in marketing from UGA in 1990. Holmes spoke of his father’s legacy on the 60th anniversary of the desegregation of the university and placed those events in the context of Dr. King’s nonviolent struggle for civil and economic rights.

$1M Terry College gift funds Sustainability Initiative

The University of Georgia received a $1 million pledge to the Terry College of Business to launch the college’s new Sustainability Initiative and fund faculty support for the endeavor.

The pledge by the family of Joanna and Stuart Brown of Telluride, Colorado, will help attract, retain and support a scholar who serves as a champion for sustainable development instruction. The endowment will provide financial resources to launch the environmental initiative and annual funds to support programs at Terry for years to come.

Stuart Brown serves as a director of Brown-Forman Corporation, one of the largest American-owned companies in the spirits and wine business. He graduated from UGA in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in history, and Joanna Brown earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 1987. Their son, Stuart Brown Jr., graduated in 2014 with a degree in political science.

"I would advise any student entering Terry to step out of their comfort zone and attend as many activities as possible! When I first got into Terry, I made sure to join clubs, such as Women in Business and International Business Society, to make friends with other Terry students who have similar career goals. Being involved on campus has made my college experience so much more enjoyable!"

Allison Doss is a third-year majoring in Finance and International Business and completing the UGA FinTech Certificate. Allison currently serves as as a member of Women in Business UGA, IB Uga, and Finance Society. In addition, she currently works as a Student Technician in Terry's Office of Information Technology and as a Rotational Intern for Defyance.

I love this page and your school’s mission to strive for excellence in the world of business. I am a business student myself and I’m always looking for ways to incorporate or learn about business outside of my studies. I just recently watched a film about an innovative technology that recently caught my attention. It’s called Empathy, Inc. and it's a sci-fi movie about a venture capitalist, Joel, investing in an extreme VR startup. The aspects of innovation and creativity are what drives this movie’s plot as the main protagonists find that newer and more advanced technology does not always mean safer. The seemingly exciting VR turns out to be much more evil than anticipated, yet it lives up to its futuristic abilities. As a business student and innovation enthusiast I highly recommend watching this film on Youtube!
