Webster’s presentation was part of the law school’s Public Interest Week, organized in partnership with the Career Development Office, which provides students with perspectives from the diverse field of public interest work.

The University of Georgia School of Law is pleased to announce the establishment of a $2 million endowment to support law students participating in international experiences and study abroad opportunities.

The Captain George N. and Norma D. Larocque Endowment was created through a partnership between the George N. Larocque Revocable Trust and the University of Georgia Foundation.

Dean Usha R. Rodrigues said: “This philanthropic partnership, coming as we prepare to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Dean Rusk International Law Center, will significantly expand international opportunities for our law students and strengthen our tradition of excellence in international law. In our increasingly interconnected world, it is more important than ever for our students to have opportunities to learn about – and immerse themselves in – different countries, cultures and legal systems.”

“This new endowment will enable more students to participate in the Rusk Center’s international initiatives, including studying abroad in Belgium and the Netherlands at the Global Governance Summer School, gaining hands-on learning experience across the world through Global Externships Overseas and learning at law schools worldwide through bilateral exchanges.

“The funding this endowment provides will be transformative because it lessens one of the greatest barriers for our students in pursuing global opportunities: cost,” Rodrigues said.

University of Georgia School of Law Professor Patrick D. Conner recently traveled to Europe and delivered presentations as part of the Crisis Communication Think Tank. Conner received financial support for his travel from the Dean Rusk International Law Center as a Rusk Scholar-in-Residence, an initiative promoting international opportunities for Georgia Law faculty that advance the mission of the Center.

Congratulations to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a leading South African jurist and former U.N. human rights chief, who won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for her lifetime commitment to international law.

Judge Pillay delivered a talk entitled "National Sovereignty vs. International Human Rights" at an event co-hosted by the University of Georgia School of Law and the World Affairs Council of Atlanta in October 2016. Judge Pillay is described as "...contribut[ing] to strengthen the institutions of international law. Her independence, expertise and steadfastness have made her one of the most respected international jurists of our time."

The University of Georgia School of Law invites students to join us next Wednesday, October 14th for "A Conversation with Leanne Webster, Director of The Carter Center’s Rule of Law Program."

In celebration of the law school's Public Interest Week, Ms. Webster will discuss her work advancing the rule of law, strengthening civil society organizations, broadening opportunity for marginalized youth, and fortifying respect for human rights, both stateside and overseas.

The discussion will take place at 12pm in classroom A/ 210 (first floor) of Hirsch Hall, the main building of the law school.

This information session is one of a monthly series. Prospective students will learn more about the city of Athens, UGA campus life, and the law school community from our Center's Mandy Dixon. There will be an overview of the LL.M. program including meeting the LL.M. staff, details about the LL.M. curriculum, scholarship opportunities, and ways the program can help with career development. Finally, the application process will be covered from start to finish and there will time for Q&A.

Judging by the number of empty pizza boxes alone, our Fall International Opportunities Information Session was a great success yesterday!

Over 70 students showed up to learn about the different ways that they can globalize their legal education at the University of Georgia School of Law, including through Global Governance Summer School, Global Externships Overseas, bilateral exchanges, our NATO Externship, and our DC Semester in Practice.

Special thanks to Professor Jessica Heywood for zooming in to share more about the international opportunities available in Washington, DC, and to our student panelists, including Olivia Buckner, Joseph King, Danny Missroon, and Tiffany Lu, for sharing reflections on their experiences abroad as law students.
