Sunshine Week celebrates open government, records, laws — News Leaders Assocation

Happy Sunshine Week! This is the week in which openness and accountability in government is urged and celebrated. Sunshine laws, or open meeting/open record laws, are not just for journalists. They are for everyone. Each year, more private citizens than journalists or news organizations file Freedom of Information Act requests with federal agencies. It's your right. Use it. To learn more about it, join OU SPJ tomorrow at 7 p.m. as Andy Alexander shares how to write and follow up on FOIA requests. He recommends a little pre-meeting reading here: https://www.newsleaders.org/sunshine-week

The meeting link is: https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3afa32915e7a9f4514ba44a575ff7f3f2b%40thread.tacv2/1608055328056?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22f3308007-477c-4a70-8889-34611817c55a%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%229fc8eb0d-5b0a-4626-85d3-8807d6c0cba6%22%7d

Sunshine Week promotes access to public information, Freedom of Information and FOIA, sunshine laws, open government meetings, records for journalists and media. It's supported by News Leaders Association, formerly ASNE.

Want to know what your government is up to? Learn how to file a Freedom of Information request. To celebrate Sunshine Week, OUSPJ will proudly host Andy Alexander to discuss the ins and outs of the Freedom of Information Act, how to file for FOIA and more! Join us this Wednesday, March 17th on Teams at 7:00 p.m. to learn all about FOIA.

Alexander served for years as the Scripps Howard Visiting Professional in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism after retiring as ombudsman for The Washington Post. He began his career working at Ohio University’s The Post and served as editor-in-chief to coordinate coverage of campus protests before, during and after the 1970 Kent State campus shootings. Alexander covered the war in Vietnam on the ground with American troops between his high school and college careers. Before his time at WaPo, he worked for Cox Newspapers and now Cox Media Group.

Don't forget, every time you attend a March meeting your name will automatically be entered in a raffle to win a free SPJ membership! We hope to see you there!

SPJ International Community #ICTalks - A Conversation with Maria Ressa 6/23

Hi SPJers: Want to learn more about the world during break? Check out this series of discussions sponsored by SPJ's International Community. I have watched two of these, and they are great! See details below:

https://mailchi.mp/89b820eb5ec3/spj-ic-update-december-ictalks-schedule

The International Community of the SPJ runs a regular series of talks with journalists and experts around the world. These events, usually held Tuesday evenings, are an excellent opportunity for your student members to have access to these journalists and experts.

December 15, in honor of the anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights we will hold a session looking at the impact the First Amendment has had on global press freedom.

Our guest for this upcoming session will be journalist and educator Sanford J. Ungar. He is the director of the Georgetown University Free Press Project and has long been an advocate of increased international awareness. During his journalism career, he was a staff writer for The Washington Post, Washington editor of The Atlantic, managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine, and co-host of “All Things Considered” on NPR. He is the author or editor of six nonfiction books, including The Papers & The Papers: An Account of the Legal and Political Battle over the Pentagon Papers.

The IC will also make available to campus chapters online access to the documentary "A Thousand Cuts," which is about the persecution by the Philippine government against the Rappler news agency and its founder Maria Ressa. We are looking to be able to provide access to this in February or March. Stay tuned for when we announce this unique opportunity for your students.

Our goal is to provide a period of three days to screen the film online and follow up with a Q+A with the director and Maria Ressa on the final day where your students will have access to ask questions directly. Back in June, Ressa was a guest of the talk series, which you can view https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6SkPxiBseg&feature=youtu.be

Future guests will include journalists from Latin America, Africa and Asia discussing issues and threats facing journalists in those regions. We will also have US-based foreign journalists talking about how they report about America to their home audiences.

If you have suggestions for future programs or need assistance putting together a program for your students, please feel free to reach out to the International Community. Perhaps there is an issue of local and global concern your members would like us to address. You can reach us by email.

You can also sign up for our updates that include announcements of our upcoming talks, discussions, and links to stories and reports about press freedom issues around the world.

On June 23, 2020, the International Community held a conversation with Maria Ressa, co-founded Rappler, known for being the top digital-only news site that i...

First Draft presents Infotheque 2020

Will you be covering elections this fall? First Draft is sponsoring a three-day seminar Aug. 4-6 on how to spot social media fakes and how to verify real ones. This organization provided on-campus instruction in March, right before the COVID-19 pandemic closed campus.

The election is three months away. The President has said he won’t commit to accepting the election results, states are struggling with the ways in which coronavirus will impact in-person voting, and meanwhile, many newsrooms say they don’t have the bandwidth to monitor for misinformation. First Draft is here to help:

Infotheque 2020 (August 4-6) is First Draft’s exclusive event to prepare journalists for covering election misinformation. Our Election Crisis Simulation will place you in the heart of a disinformation campaign and will challenge you to make editorial decisions about how to report in real-time. Civil Rights Attorney and Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights Director Vanita Gupta will kick off the event with a keynote and conversation with First Draft U.S. Director Claire Wardle. Two days of sessions will cover digital investigation skills, how to think about local and “elite” misinformation,” Facebook political advertising, election protection, and reporting misinformation that targets Black and latinx communities. The week closes with a keynote by Texas Tribune Executive Editor Stacy-Marie Ishmael.

Register at this link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/first-draft-presents-infotheque-2020-tickets-111025728944
The access code is ballot2020.

Our inaugural virtual event for the First Draft Journalist Community* designed to prepare journalists for election misinformation.
