When Taking a Nap Is a Political Act | Broadly

"What is it like to sleep under a blue sky? To stretch out on the grass and feel the earth under you? To close your eyes and hear the quiet hum of traffic or the chirp of a sparrow?

I have no idea.

The freedom to rest or sleep in a public space is one that women in India don't enjoy—being idle in public is not something we do."

Iraq’s female cycling champions continue to ride their own race

"While the war with Isis rages just 25 miles away and the threat of kidnap is all too real, Iraq's gold medal-winning female cycling team continues to ride its own race."

The sun dips as the cyclists from Iraq's national team move effortlessly around a bend in the road. They climb the hill by the sprawling university and shake off a group of men trying to outrace them on scooters. Women Making $70 Feminist Shirts in Factory Paid Under a Dollar an Hour

"It would take a woman working in the factory nearly two weeks just to buy one shirt. What is feminist about that? These women have nothing in this world. They are paid a pittance and any money they do receive they send back home.
They work very long hours and have no lives other than their work. They are on four-year contracts that mean they don't get to see their families in that time. What kind of existence is it when you are sharing your bedroom with 15 other women?"

In a new investigative report published at the Mail on Sunday, a reporter discovered that women in Mauritius who were hired to make shirts that read "This is what a feminist looks like" have been paid roughly a dollar an hour to do so and sleep in dormitories that house 16 women at a time.

Rebecca Solnit: Men Explain Things to Me

Great Article!

Some pearls: "Young women needed to know that being belittled wasn’t the result of their own secret failings; it was the boring old gender wars."

"Mansplaining is not a universal flaw of the gender, just the intersection between overconfidence and cluelessness where some portion of that gender gets stuck."

Before there was mansplaining, there was Rebecca Solnit's 2008 critique of male arrogance. Reprinted here with a new introduction.

"As two trans women, Ms. Beard and I had some common experiences. But the differences between us have to be understood not only in terms of race but also in the way the oppressions generated by race and gender are bound together."

Op-Ed: Ohio University faculty members want mandatory reporter rule reevaluated

"In the larger picture, we are concerned about the dearth of confidential resources for students who have experienced sexual assault, harassment or other sexual misconduct. We call upon the university to maintain (and ideally expand) the scope of OUSAP, including especially its confidential peer advocates: students trained in trauma-informed care who are uniquely positioned to offer support."

University educators sign op-ed that expresses their concern over the current state of "confidential resources" for students who have been sexually assaulted.
