Calling all students!! the Department of Geology is planning to host our first-ever Geoscience Career Fair 🥳 We want to do this right and make this event suited toward students’ needs–no matter your year, major, or degree–so we made a short, anonymous form! 😁

We love clay mineralogy! Stay til the end for a surprise! 🤗🤗

Dr. Paul Schroeder and his team help students study clays and clay minerals—the Earth’s most common nanocrystals! 🔮

An example is Kaolin! Kaolin is a common clay mineral mined in Georgia that’s used in stomach medicine 💊 and skincare! 🧴

Using tools like Raman spectroscopy, radiogenic, cosmogenic, and stable isotopes, chemical and thermal analyses, plus X-ray 🩻 and electron diffraction, Dr. Schroeder’s team conducts game changing experiments to advance our understanding of clay systems! 🧪✨

Which field school geologist are you? Who did we miss? 👀🪨

Though there are many ways you can dress for field work, everyone should consider what is needed for the work they’re doing. Trudging through undergrowth may require long sleeves and gaiters, long days in the sun will require UV protection, long trecks will require appropriate packing and safety considerations, and so on! And though field work is no fashion show, it is nice to feel ✨fashionable✨ while doing it 😜

Our students have finished their last project of field school at Mixing Bowl (Temple Canyon)! Today we’re packing up and cleaning everywhere as the program comes to a close 😌🥳

This summer has been challenging, but also rewarding as students learn a lot about geology in the field, mapping, GIS, and teamwork. We’re very proud of all the hard work they’ve put in 🙌🔥

We’ll be hitting the road (or airport) back for Georgia tomorrow. Go GeoDawgs! 🐶⛏️

The students’ mapping project at South Twin Mountain is nearly complete! 🤩

We spent the last four days in the field collecting data for students to make a geologic map, structural map, and cross section of the area. We’re proud of our students for pushing through the long, hot, gnat-filled days, and know that they’ll be proud of their final products 🙌😎

One day off tomorrow, then we’ll begin our last project of field school at Mixing Bowl (Temple Canyon). We’ll keep you updated! 🔥

We're proud of our hardworking students for finishing up a week of GIS, cross-sections, and ore deposit work mostly in the classroom. Today we're starting our next mapping project on South Twin Mountain just outside of Cañon City! 🥳

Students used GPS waypoints collected at our first mapping site (Red Hill) to construct geologic maps in ArcGIS Pro. Dr. Klimczak also led the group in a geologic cross-section short course to review the kink-band method that will be applied in future mapping projects. 🤓

We'd also like to recognize and thank UGA Alum Mr. Jeff Blackmon and Zephyr for allowing us to visit an active prospect site near Cañon City to map an ore deposit and present on its potential. This was a valuable learning experience that we're extremely grateful for! 🙏

Taking a strike and dip in the field but it’s paced like One Piece... ☠️

Geologists use compasses to measure the orientation of rock layers in the field! 🪨 A good way to think of it is with the right hand rule. Take your right hand and orient it so that your fingers point “down-dip,” or on the slope of the plane. Your thumb will be the direction you measure strike, and your fingers will be the dip! 🧭 Similar methods can be used for other features, like fault orientations, lineations, etc. 😎

Understanding the architecture of the rocks beneath our feet is important for making structurally sound infrastructure, avoiding groundwater contamination, assessing geologic hazards like earthquakes and landslides, evaluating economic resources like minerals and hydrocarbons, and more! The list of geology’s uses goes on and on 🌎⛏️
