Advice from Current UGA Students: How Your Student Can Get Involved 🐾

The first few weeks of college are a great time for your student to start finding their community at UGA. Here are a couple of tips from current UGA students on what helped them meet people and get involved!

- Start with the Engagement Fair
Encourage your student to stop by Tate Student Center on Tuesday, September 1, from 7–10 p.m. to explore student organizations and opportunities across campus. With hundreds of organizations represented, they can discover new interests and find something that fits their schedule and personality.

- Sign up for an Intramural Sports team
Your student can grab their roommate or a few people from their residence hall and sign up for an IM sport. They don’t have to be a competitive athlete - it’s a fun way to stay active and meet other students.

- Change where they study
Encourage your student to study somewhere other than their room. The MLC, Main Library, Tate Student Center and residence hall study spaces are all great options. Spending time in shared spaces can create opportunities to meet classmates and other students.

- Take advantage of Tate Student Center events
Encourage your student to check the Tate calendar and attend events throughout the semester. Movies, games, workshops and other activities provide opportunities to meet students outside of their classes.

- Participate in residence hall events
Remind your student to take advantage of community events in their residence hall, especially during the first few weeks. They can bring their roommate or a neighbor, introduce themselves to their hallmates and start building connections within their community.

There are so many opportunities to get involved at UGA - encourage your student to try something new and find what makes campus feel like home ❤️

Your student has unpacked, made it through the first week of classes, and is starting to settle into life at UGA. Now that Week 2 is here, here are a few simple ways they can get into a routine:

🍴 Find their go-to spot to eat — Try a new dining hall, grab a meal on campus, or find a favorite spot around Athens.

🏠 Get to know their community — Meet a few neighbors, say hi to their RA, and check out what’s happening in their residence hall.

🐾 Explore campus life — Week 2 is a good time to look into student organizations, events, and activities that interest them.

📍 Get to know Athens — They’ve probably figured out their class routes by now. Next step: find a few favorite places around campus and Athens.

💬 Parents, check in — Ask how things are going, but give them room to settle into their own routine, too.

There’s a special kind of magic in turning a dorm room into a home, and the energy across Mell and Lipscomb Halls this week says it all. Watching them spread their wings is equal parts proud and bittersweet, but you’ve raised them for this moment. We’ve got it from here, and we can’t wait to watch them thrive as part of our UGA family.
