The University of Georgia College of Pharmacy offers the Doctor of Pharmacy professional degree. Based in Athens, Georgia and affiliated with the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, the college admits about 145 students a year. The four-year professional program integrates classroom, laboratory and experiential training in a curriculum organized around both human physiology and disease states. The college also offers graduate studies in disciplines associated with pharmacotherapeutic research, clinical work, and administration.

Congratulations to Dr. Eileen Kennedy, the Dr. Samuel C. Benedict Professor in UGA COP Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences, who just received notice from the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research that her grant, titled “Biochemical and Structural Characterization of the LRRK2 Activation Cycle to Develop LRRK2 Inhibitors,” has been funded for $1.46 Million! Dr. Kennedy is a PI on this grant, which represents an international team that includes The German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases and the University of Groningen, in The Netherlands. The College of Pharmacy hosted the UGA Business & Administrative Affairs Forum this morning, which included business and financial managers and directors from across campus. Highlights from the forum, which is held twice a year, included a presentation from Provost S. Jack Hu, who provided an overview of UGA's future plans and strategies; Dr. Kyle Tschepikow, Special Assistant to the President and Director for Strategy and Innovation, who shared an update on UGA's Innovation District; Juan Jarrett, Associate Vice President for Human Resources, who introduced Tamara Freeman, the new Deputy Director for Human Resources; Brett Jackson, Assistant VP and CFO for UGA's Foundation, and Marie Mize, Law School and President of the UGA Staff Resource Group, who shared future plans for staff professional development; Ryan Nesbit, Vice President for Finance and Administration, who updated the group on the budget and legislative processes; and Chris Miller, Associate Provost for Academic Fiscal Affairs; and Marisa Pagnattaro, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, who discussed the UGA's critical hiring process. PharmDawg students continue to soar! Our latest champion is Savannah Rainey, a second year PharmD student from Hawkinsville, Ga., who has been selected to serve on the Student Leadership Council of the National Community Pharmacy Association! This national council is comprised of 16 members, eight of whom were selected this term from pharmacy schools across the country. The Student Leadership Association is a two-year commitment in which pharmacy students promote the profession of independent pharmacy to NCPA student chapters as well as NCPA student affairs. Back at UGA, Savannah is her NCPA chapter's Outreach Coordinator and the Fundraising Chair for the American Pharmacists Association-ASP. Way to represent, Savannah! Kudos to Rebecca Bruning, 3rd year PharmD student on our Augusta campus! Becca has been selected to serve on the national APhA-ASP Awards Standing Committee. Comprised of the national President-Elect and four members chosen from applicants throughout the country, this committee works to select recipients for annual awards based on Chapter Achievement Reports. The committee also provides individual feedback to APhA-ASP Chapters for performance improvement. Said Becca, "My involvement in APhA-ASP has shaped my pharmacy experience in unimaginable ways. It's a wrap! The College of Pharmacy's Office of Continuing Professional Development and Outreach sponsored the 2020 Mental Health Symposium in Athens this week. Highlighting the cadre of outstanding speakers were several key CoP leaders, including Dean Kelly Smith, who welcomed attendees; Dr. Merrill Norton, Clinical Associate Professor; and Dr. Trina Johnson von Waldner, Director of Office of Continuing Professional Development and Outreach, who spearheaded the program. The more than 80 attendees were comprised of pharmacists, physicians, social workers, and our own students who learned about current concepts in the treatment of mental health disorders as well as advances in pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment of mental health and other associated chronic diseases. The National Hispanic Pharmacists Association-UGA, our newest student org, is sponsoring a bake sale in the Pharmacy South Lobby on Thursday from 8:30-9:30 am and during Org Hour, and again on Friday from 8:30-9:30 am. Proceeds will benefit earthquake relief efforts in Puerto Rico. The treats are DELISH…and the cause is heartfelt!

NHPA is focused on improving the health of Hispanics through an increased pharmacy presence in that community. The bake sale will support fellow pharmacy and nursing students in Puerto Rico who are assisting the elderly devastated by the recent earthquake with needed health care and personal supplies (pictured) and personal care. Day at the Dome! Yesterday was a highlight for more than 160 UGA College of Pharmacy students, along with a few faculty members, who participated in "Day at the Dome." PharmDawgs spoke with legislators, such as Rep Marcus Wiedower, District 119; Rep. Houston Gaines, District 117; and Rep. Spencer Frye, District 118, about transparency in prescription drug pricing. Congratulations to Dr. Eileen Kennedy, Associate Professor in Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences, who is the new Dr. Samuel C. Benedict Professor at the College of Pharmacy. The inaugural recipient, Dr. Kennedy was honored at a reception held Wednesday and is pictured with Dr. Brian Cummings, Department Head for PBS and Dean Kelly Smith. Recognizing individuals at early stages in their career with significant accomplishments, the Benedict Professorship is designated for an Associate Professor who has shown significant achievements in obtaining long-term extramural grant funding. Besides being an outstanding teacher to CoP students, Dr. Kennedy has published 41 peer reviewed manuscripts and obtained four grants from nationally recognized extramural organizations. She focuses her research on the development of alpha-helical stapled peptides for targeting difficult to "un-druggable" targets. Kudos, Dr. Kennedy! We are #PharmDawgProud #pharmdawgs
