Founded in 2005 as a response to the state's need to address important health concerns in Georgia, the UGA College of Public Health is dedicated to excellence and innovation in instruction, high-quality research and positive impact on communities through outreach and engagement activities. h and lives of the people we serve in the state of Georgia, the nation and in other countries through our meaningful and evolving international programs and projects. The UGA College of Public Health offers degrees in biostatistics, disaster management, environmental health, epidemiology, gerontology, health promotion and behavior, public health, health policy and management, health administration, and toxicology. Certificates in gerontology, disaster management, infectious disease epidemiology, and global health are also offered.

The Department of Environmental Health Science is settling into its new home at Cedar B East and celebrated with a cookout for faculty, staff and students last week.

The new space features more than 11,500 square feet of lab space, a graduate student office, multiple spaces for collaborative work, and more than 20 offices for faculty and staff.

EHS shares the newly renovated building with colleagues and collaborators from Engineering, Genetics, Ecology, Cell Biology, Entomology, and Crop and Soil Sciences; as well as the insect zoo and biology teaching labs run by an EHS alumnus.

The UGA College of Public Health is proud to announce Dr. Laura Magaña as our keynote speaker for the 15th annual State of the Public’s Health Conference (SOPH).

Magaña is the President and CEO of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) in Washington, DC, and the Founding President of the Global Network for Academic Public Health(GNAPH) – an alliance of seven regional associations representing schools and programs of public health around the world.

SOPH will take place on Thursday, October 15, 2026 at the UGA Center for Continuing Education & Hotel.

The UGA College of Public Health is proud to announce that Jessica C. Smith will now serve as our new Assistant Dean for Academic Programs and Student Success.

“I’m honored to be taking on this role in the College of Public Health. I look forward to working closely with our leadership, faculty, staff, and students to further strengthen our academic programs, support student success, and advance CPH’s mission,” Smith said.

Smith will support the college through curriculum review, faculty resource planning and student services coordination. Her efforts will provide support to create a consistent, high-quality student experience while future proofing the college through following trends and reviewing curriculum needs for growth.

From Athens to Oaxaca, Mexico, one of our Public Health Dawgs took what she learned in the classroom into communities around the world! 🐾🌎

Health promotion major Bridget Perez spent two weeks in Oaxaca, Mexico, as a medical outreach intern with VAW Global Health Alliances. She worked alongside local physicians, nurses, community partners, and fellow interns in mobile clinics serving underserved and rural communities.

“My days included traveling to different communities, setting up clinics which could be anywhere even in the middle of a flea market, taking vital signs such as manual blood pressures on patients, and learning alongside local healthcare professionals,” Bridget said. “Outside the clinic time, living with a host family, experiencing Oaxacan traditions, and spending time within the communities helped me better understand the importance of cultural competency and community connection.”

“The experience showed me that public health and clinical care go hand in hand. Improving health means not only caring for individual patients, but also addressing barriers to healthcare, promoting prevention through patient education, understanding culture, and building relationships with the communities we serve.”

New research from the University of Georgia shows that more people might volunteer to clean up their communities if they believe it will benefit them.

Researchers conducted two surveys with more than 1,000 adults in coastal regions ranging from Georgia to California. Connecting cleanup with something positive, like improved physical fitness, making friends or feelings of accomplishments, resonated with participants.

“When we think about messaging, sometimes we think we’re going to get attention if we tell people they’ll lose something, right? But the messages we generate might have a broader impact if they’re positive,” said Jennifer Gay, corresponding author of the study and an associate professor in the College of Public Health.
