Participate in a Research Study from Home!

The University of Georgia Institute of Gerontology is looking for people aged 65-115 years with memory problems, or a recent diagnosis of Alzheimerโ€™s disease or a related dementia. We are also looking for caregivers for people with Alzheimerโ€™s disease or a related dementia.

Goals: We are working with a local Georgia company (Cloud Mustang) to create new technology for helping people with memory loss communicate with their caregivers. In this study, you will:
โ€ข look at designs for the technology
โ€ข provide feedback on whether or not this technology would help you
โ€ข tell us how we can make it better

Possible Risks and Discomfort: Cognition testing for people with memory loss can be frustrating. No risks are expected.

Incentives: Because of the need to socially distance during COVID19, testing will be conducted over the internet. Participants will receive $25 per video call, two calls required.

To participate: Contact the UGA Institute of Gerontology by emailing us at [email protected]

Consider supporting our community partner, Athens Community Council on Aging, during Giving Tuesday. Since March 16, they have provided over 34,126 meals to 1,404 older adults and have placed over 1,400 safety check phone calls. Their donation goal is $5,000, the amount needed to feed 200 older adults for a week during our COVID-19 emergency food relief efforts. For details, see below.

In this time of uncertainty, there is a fundamental truth that gives us hope - that together we can do extraordinary things! That is why we are participating in Giving Tuesday Now, a global day of unity and giving taking place today as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.

The situation remains serious, especially for older adults, so our work to ensure that no senior is left behind must continue. Our goal for Giving Tuesday Now is raising $5,000, the amount needed to feed 200 seniors for a week during our COVID-19 emergency food relief efforts.

Please consider a gift today in support of ACCA and help spread the word on this Giving Tuesday. https://www.gagives.org/story/Accagivingtuesday

Today marks the start of Older Americans Month. While we cannot celebrate it as usual, we still encourage individuals and communities to reflect on the countless contributions that older adults make to our lives and nation. This year's theme, "Make Your Mark," highlights the difference everyone can make โ€“ in the lives of older adults, in support of caregivers, and to strengthen communities.

To get us started, the ACL put together a short list of ideas on how to socialize, learn, explore, unwind, and connect during this time of increased isolation.

Congratulations to Dr. Kerstin Gerst Emerson for being awarded the 2020 College of Public Health's Excellence in Service Award!

As UGA's Honor Week begins today - highlighting service - we would like to congratulate and celebrate Dr. Kerstin Gerst Emerson, the 2020 recipient of the College of Public Health's Excellence in Service Award.

Dr. Emerson, a clinical associate professor at the UGA Institute of Gerontology, is a tireless advocate for older adults. She incorporates service into her teaching and works to educate both her students and the masses about the dangers of ageism and the importance of social connectedness in older persons. As faculty mentor for the Gerontology Club, she and her students deliver many valuable services to the older adult community, ranging from โ€œSanta for a Senior,โ€ which provides much needed items to older adults in low resource settings, to the annual Memory Walk in support of the Alzheimer's Association, Georgia Chapter.

Amazingly, Dr. Emerson also finds the time to serve on numerous task forces and boards, including the OLLI - UGA Special Interest Group, all of which seek to promote health, well-being, and a sense of community among older adults.

We thank Dr. Emerson not only for her amazing service and outreach work, but for her impactful mentorship in gerontology, all of which have created a community more aware of the challenges that older adults face and more deeply committed to creating safe and positive spaces for people to grow old in.

Social distancing can save seniorsโ€™ lives but deepen their loneliness

Dr. Emerson is quoted in the story below, urging the public to remember the importance of social interaction for older adults while also practicing social distancing during the pandemic.

Social distancing is a vital tool to help seniors avoid COVID-19. But it may be exacerbating a longtime problem for older people: social isolation, which can lead to loneliness.

If we get no answer on the second attempt, we will then have an officer dispatched to your residence to check on you. If you do not answer, then weโ€™ll attempt contact with your emergency point of contact, and if needed, we will enter your residence to check on you.
