Ohio University Multicultural Center

The Multicultural Center serves as a place where cultural teaching and learning are the focus of all programs and activities. Its focus is intercultural, and provides a place where members of the university community, representing a variety of backgrounds, participate in programs and activities. All programming for the Center is designed to increase human understanding through the study and expression of culture. The Office of Multicultural Programs seeks to provide a diverse range of programs and opportunities that are educational, recreational, social and cultural. Committed to supporting and promoting multicultural awareness, the staff develops programs that increase understanding and appreciation of cultural differences by familiarizing the campus community with the contributions and histories of African American, Hispanic/Latino American, Asian American, and Native American cultures.

Happy Juneteenth!! Today we celebrate the freedom of enslaved African Americans and the end of slavery itself. Today in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas and announced the end of slavery. Check out these important informative graphics to learn more about why we celebrate Juneteenth.

Repost from Ohio University African Students Union. Please consider helping the international student community by donating if you are able.

Ohio University’s international student population is in a unique and precarious position for summer. International students, according to immigration regulations, are unable to work off-campus without specific authorization. Many students who had authorization to work off-campus at paid internships lost those internship opportunities as businesses and office buildings in the United States closed according to state guidelines in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19. In addition, many students who would have gone home for the summer and even those who have graduated are stuck in the United States as flights were cancelled and borders were closed.

Because their visas do not allow off-campus work, and the CARES Act funds are not available to these students as stipulated by the U.S. Department of Education, many of these students have no source of income for the summer. Bound to year-long rental leases and not wanting to hurt the community of Athens by not paying rent, students are in need of support. As a result, in collaboration with members of the Athens, Ohio, community and the International Student Task Force, an International Student Emergency Relief Fund has been established.
We hope that you will consider supporting this vulnerable community by making a gift to the International Student Emergency Relief Fund, which provides support to Ohio University's international students during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
Please follow the link ( https://c-fund.us/rtq/ ) to place a donation. ❤️

We must acknowledge the changes that need be made to ensure equality for all. OHIO is a place of opportunity. Our voices carry power.
Words matter. Here at OHIO we have the opportunity to make a change by using our voices and listening to those in our community that have been impacted by the racial injustices.
Join us for the Black Lives Matter Panel discussion Monday, June 15, 12-1:30pm to address issues of systematic racism.
There will be more virtual discussions, workshops, and programs that will work to help us all come together as a campus community

On a beautiful day like today, it’s important to remember to spend time outside! (In a socially distant manner, of course.) Go for a bike ride, take a walk around the neighborhood, or find a new trail to hike and explore. Get some sunshine and relieve your stress! ☀️🌱

Happy Friday all! We only have a few Q-Tips left, but today’s is important: Tell your friends and family you love them. ❤️ This goes hand-in-hand with one of our last Q-Tips; expressing gratitude. We feel that it’s important right now to stress being thankful for not only the things you have, but the people in your life. Sometimes we get carried away with our job, social life, or everyday stresses, but we can’t forget about the ones we love. Send your friend or family member a text today letting them know you’re thinking of them. 💌

Tune in TONIGHT at 8 pm to watch the play broadcast Objects in the Mirror. Written by Distinguished Professor, Charles Smith, Objects In The Mirror provides an account of this brave Liberian’s (Shedrick Yarkpai) search for civility; showcasing the lengths one person must go to reclaim identity and assimilate with dignity. One of our own, Avery LaMar Pope helps to tell this story of identity, peace, and a fuller life. Use the link provided to watch!

Tune in around 7:50pm to ensure that all of the audio is locked in and working. The show will begin at 8:00pm. While it is good audio quality, the sound engineers and producers highly recommend using headphones for the full experience.

Today’s Q-Tip is to express gratitude. The past few months have been very difficult, and it can be hard to see the good things in our lives when everything looks so bad. Today, try to take a bit of time to express gratitude for the things you have. Whether that be a roof over your head, food in your fridge, or even a good friend. It’s important to appreciate the small things, now more than ever.
