Every Bulldog takes a different path to UGA, but the one place they intersect is UGA Orientation.

Designed for incoming first-year and transfer students, New Student Orientation provides the essential information, resources, and connections necessary for students to succeed academically and socially. These programs prepare both students and families to confidently navigate the collegiate journey.

More than two dozen orientation sessions take place from May through August, and more than 80 offices across campus come together to make that happen. The goal is to offer incoming students an authentic experience so that they know what to expect when classes begin.

The decision to crack open a beer on a hot summer day may be about more than refreshment, according to the University of Georgia School of Social Work.

The new research found that adverse childhood experiences, particularly negative relationships between a child and parent, were linked to more frequent drinking during periods of extreme heat. Although it is unclear whether negative childhood experiences directly contributed to later drinking patterns, the association is concerning — not only because alcohol consumption during extreme heat can increase the risks of dehydration and cardiovascular harm but also because of its potential psychological consequences.

Before the start of the fall semester, over the span of five days and hundreds of miles of traveling, new faculty traveled through 53 counties and 87 cities to better understand the state, build connections and explore how their teaching, research and service can benefit Georgia.

Now in its 40th year, the New Faculty Tour, coordinated by UGA Public Service and Outreach, is designed to introduce faculty to Georgia’s geography, demographics, economy, history and culture while familiarizing them with UGA’s land-grant and sea-grant missions and longstanding commitment to serving the state.

New research from the University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources suggests that social media could be influencing people’s travel plans.

When people post photos and videos of their trip, they may not be using those posts to just update family and friends on what they’re up to. The researchers found that social media influenced travel plans across all age groups, but millennials were the most impacted. They were more likely to say that people who post about their travels are cool, and that this coolness factor motivates them to go to those same places and post about their own travels to boost their social status.

This past summer, the Costa Rican jungle became a living laboratory for University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine and University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources students.

They participated in an immersive study away experience focused on conservation medicine and biology, specifically how human activities influence biodiversity and ecosystems. Their month was spent honing their technical skills at a wildlife rehabilitation center, learning methods of wildlife investigation through independent research projects, and working in various regions of the country with different social and economic factors and environmental issues.

Before starting classes and receiving their official white coats, the 64 students from The University of Georgia School of Medicine's inaugural class traveled across Georgia to learn more about the state they hope to one day serve. This is just the first step in UGA's journey to address the state's physician shortage and create a healthier Georgia.

Congratulations to The University of Georgia College of Engineering professor Kyle Johnsen, who received the 2026 Innovation Award from Georgia Life Sciences, the state’s largest life sciences advocacy and business leadership organization, at the 2026 Golden Helix awards. Go Dawgs!

Johnsen helped develop Targeted Brain Rehabilitation (TBR), a gaze-controlled virtual reality (VR) therapy designed to treat phantom limb pain in amputees. The technology guides patients through four progressive phases, moving from simple hand recognition to guided meditation, mirror therapy, and finally a VR simulation that projects an intact limb the amputee can manipulate.
