Athens State University helping students in financial hardship throughout pandemic

Athens State is happy to be able to help our students during this difficult time. We understand there are financial needs outside the classroom, especially in times of crisis. Thanks to many selfless donors, we are able to provide funds to students in need through our Emergency Student Assistance Fund. Established in 2016, this fund helps students when they need it the most by assisting with expenses such as groceries, car repairs, gasoline, utilities, etc.

To help as many students in need as possible, the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention Steering Committee has pledged to match all donations to the fund up to $50,000! If you are able, visit www.athens.edu/give to make your donation.

We are all in this together, and we will come out stronger on the other side. #AthensForever #WeCare

In This Together - Athens Forever

A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT PHILIP WAY

In my short tenure as President here at Athens State University, I have had the opportunity to learn a great deal about the history of this place we call home and the people that make this institution a beacon of light for so many seeking to brighten their future through education. This tradition, carefully cradled through decades and centuries of service to the Tennessee Valley and beyond, embodies a hope of a better future for our students, their families, and our society.

The disruptions that define our life today as it relates to the COVID-19 crisis brings to mind a typhoid outbreak on our campus in 1909 that claimed the lives of fourteen students and one staff member. Unlike that situation, we have no reported cases of COVID-19 on campus, and all students have transitioned to an online format with many staff working remotely and other essential employees working in areas that are able to maintain safe distancing.

Through the many adversities that our University has faced over our 198 years, we have always persevered. We will persevere once more! Our collective hearts break for those who have been adversely affected, and please rest assured that we will do everything within our power to assist you through these difficult times.

As our beautiful, historic campus comes to life with the dawning of spring, we look forward to the not-too-distant future when we can be together again as students, instructors, staff, and as family.

We are – Athens Forever!

Dr. Philip Way
President

Yesterday afternoon, the Alabama State Health Officer, in coordination with the Governor's office, issued an order suspending certain public gatherings due to the risk of infection by COVID-19. In accordance with that directive, the Athens State University campus will be closed to students and the general public until further notice. Additionally, all University events are cancelled until further notice.

While in-person classes at the University will not be held, we will continue to offer all classes in an online format through Blackboard or another electronic means of learning delivery. In a precautionary effort to safeguard the Athens State University campus community, it has become necessary to take additional steps to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). In that effort, all on-campus and blended classes will transition to online instruction beginning after Spring Break, Monday, March 23. More information will follow for students who are impacted by this change.

We are not aware of any COVID-19 cases among our students, faculty, or staff at this time. However, we are moving classes online out of an abundance of caution. We also feel this will better allow our students to manage childcare needs associated with this situation.

As one of the first institutions in the state of Alabama to offer distance learning opportunities, Athens State is well-equipped to serve students electronically during this uncertain and rapidly-evolving time, and we are committed to the continuity of learning for all students.

It’s sad that classes are online for right now, but I hope everyone is doing well during this time! I’ve seen a lot of different suggestions for what to do during social distancing, and I wanted to share a movie streaming platform that I’ve really liked. It’s called Film Festival Flix; it’s a website where film festivals post the movies they have shown in the past or will show on the website. I’ve seen a lot of great ones that I wouldn’t normally have gotten the chance to see if they’re not on other streaming services, and it’s been a great way to spend the extra free time I have. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for something to watch; I hope this has helped with some quarantine boredom!
