It’s our favorite week of the year! National School Counseling Week is a great time to reflect on our career and impact. We also like how it’s not necessarily a “school counselor appreciation week.” We want to take this time to EDUCATE about and ADVOCATE for our role so that we can beat serve students. This week we will be sharing some thoughts on that, so join along! //

Several of our students have loved getting to know Marie over the past years! We will miss her at Aderhold!

Marie McGaffrey has worked at Bone Appetit in Aderhold Hall for seven years and will move to The Station at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Today was her last day.

As a small measure of thankfulness, Dean Denise Spangler presented her with a Jamie Calkin Art print of Aderhold Hall and a journal signed by COE students, faculty and staff. Thank you Ms. Marie! ❤️

One of UGASCA's biggest annual projects is the Road to College Fundraiser. Each year, our members work hard to raise money to fund a scholarship for an in-need high school senior from the Clarke County School District. We have set a goal this year of providing scholarships to TWO seniors and we would love your help!

Please use the link below to donate to this great cause. 100% of funds raised will go towards the scholarships we provide.

Last week, both first and second year cohorts of our M.Ed. students received training in Youth Mental Health First Aid.
Our group was the fifth group to be trained in the Athens, GA area! We are grateful that we had the opportunity to participate in such an important training & receive YMHFA certification as practicum and internship experiences approach.

According to Mental Health First Aid USA:
"Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders."
