The Oscars’ New Diversity Rules Are Sweeping but Safe

The Oscar new Diversity Rules rocked the entire film industry, “setting off a firestorm of praise and criticism.” The Academy Award took a significant step in favor of equal opportunities for people of all races, nationalities, and sexualities after nine decades of white male dominance in the industry. While reactions were mostly positive, some voices have been less supportive; nevertheless, in Kyle Buchanan’s September 9th article in the New York Times, he describes the new qualifications as “Sweeping but Safe.”

Although the initiative is meant to encourage major changes, the best-picture qualifications aren’t as strict as they may seem.

This college looks like it has such resourceful facilities for its students where skills and talents can be nurtured! When in the business of creation, good support can often increase the success of creative projects. If anyone was interested, I recently found out about an indie comedy hidden gem that was filmed in the 80’s but unfortunately, because of lack of support and obstacles in production, could not be completed for public release until 2016. Directed by Neil Cohen and Zack Norman, Chief Zabu is a socio-political satire film that held a lot of relevance back when it was originally supposed to be released in the 1980’s and still maintains that relevance even now. The comedy follows two bumbling real estate agents in New York as they try to establish political power in a small Polynesian island without having any experience in politics! Zack Norman plays one of the leads as well alongside Allen Garfield as the two real estate agents and the neurotic energy between them is hilarious! It’s an 80’s comedy through and through, but it still manages to reflect parts of society that we would see today. I highly recommend it as it’s finally been able to leave it's time capsule after more than 30 years.

This looks like a really great program for aspiring filmmakers like myself! Since I’ve been spending so much time at home lately, I’ve been trying to explore more independent cinema instead of scrolling through the same movies I always see on mainstream platforms. I found a really great streaming service for indie films in particular called Film Festival Flix that has full collections from studios such as Drafthouse and Kino Lorber. I just watched a really great film on there called “The Congress” that is both live-action and animation and had a really interesting take on celebrity culture and the exploitation involved in it. I thought it was a really great film that didn’t get the hype it deserved and found that that’s the case for most of the movies on the platform! If you all are looking for something new, maybe this could be of some use to you!

College students looking for more films to check out during this time indoors, I highly recommend hopping over to FilmFestivalFlix.com and checking out their fairly massive selection of unique independent films. I've been pleasantly surprised with the amount of genres the service covers from action to comedy. I just watched the film Graceland and thought it was a great thriller with some surprising twists. I recommend starting there!
I would highly recommend watching this at 1.45pm at the Ann Arbor Film Fest. Streaming for free!
Come audition this weekend!! Tell yo friends
The reviews are great for the Ohio University Film School! I'm sure this program is full of amazing, creative arthouse students like myself. I've been really interested in independent films lately and I'd like to highly recommend watching “Empathy, Inc.” It just released last month and I really enjoy its culturally significant plot and innovative VR/mind switching technology. This sci-fi thriller absolutely blew my expectations out of the park with its dedicated acting and detailed props. I highly suggest renting it on VOD!
As a filmmaker and film student myself, It is always great to see the team independent filmmakers pursuing their art! A great independent movie that I just saw that I think epitomizes the strengths of a director working on an indie budget is Empathy Inc. It's pretty mind-bending stuff and it'll come on VOD on September 24th
