May the Fourth be with you (and your droids) ⭐️
Senior computer science majors Parker Riggs, Ayden Herring, Peyton Powers and Clay Hess have spent the past two semesters making a Star Wars fan's dream a reality by building an autonomous MSE "mouse" droid for their senior capstone design project.
The students were advised by Professor of Instruction Nasseef Abukamail, who provided course oversight, and Stocker Visiting Professor Trevor Bihl, who originated the idea for the project and gave the group week-to-week guidance as their technical advisor and client.
The choice to build a MSE droid was deliberate to make the project visually engaging while accomplishing several engineering challenges around robotics, embedded systems and AI integration.
Rather than use remote control technology, the group utilized advanced autonomous logic to enable integrated autonomy, perception and interaction. The end result was a droid not only able to intelligently move and react to its environment, but one that can engage in intelligent conversation. Fictional lore becomes reality.
"'Star Wars' has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. It is one of my all-time favorite franchises and one of my dad’s as well, so getting to build something directly inspired by it made this project hit a lot closer to home than a typical senior capstone. Being a film fan in general, those movies hold a special place, and being able to say I built a piece of that universe is something I am genuinely proud of." — Parker Riggs
